Gravity, Geoid and Space Missions

This volume represents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Gravity, Geoid, and Space Missions (GGSM2004), held in Porto, Portugal, 30 August - 3 September 2004. The symposium encompassed the themes of Commission 2 (Gravity Field) of IAG, as well as interdisciplinary topics related to geoid and gravity field, including integration of heterogeneous data and contributions from satellite and airborne techniques. Special focus was on gravity-dedicated satellite missions like CHAMP, GRACE, and GOCE. Projects addressing topographic and ice field mapping using SAR, LIDAR, and laser altimetry, as well as missions and studies related to planetary geodesy were also covered.

New Perspectives in the Treatment of Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder caused by autoantibodies against post-synaptic proteins at the neuromuscular junction. These antibodies mostly attack the acetylcholine receptor (AChR), the muscle-specific kinase (MuSK), and the low-density lipoprotein-related protein 4 (LRP4). The main clinical characteristic of the disease is the presence of fluctuating fatigable muscle weakness involving the extraocular, facial, bulbar, respiratory, cervical, and proximal limb muscles. It is known that the thymus has an important role in the pathophysiology of the disease, and some patients associate a thymoma.

The concept of cities as potential photovoltaic power plants is rapidly gaining prominence, but until now there has been no large scale study of the impacts of such development on urban fabric and infrastructure, or on inhabitants. This book, based on wide-ranging studies supported by the European Commission and International Energy Agency, is the first to properly address these issues. It sets out by looking at the implications on planning policy of PV in the urban environment, and giving an overview of the implementation and occupation processes. It then moves on to present detailed case studies from a range of European cites, examining the role of large scale PV installations in urban renewal and new urban area development stretching back over 15 years. It ends with a review of technical guidelines for PV, and regulation/legalities surrounding planning, building and grid connection. The book will form an essential resource for planners and developers who are considering including large scale PV in their plans and who want to understand what has (or hasn't) worked, and why. Satellite altimetry is a radar technique for measuring the topography of the Earth’s surface. It was initially designed for measuring the ocean’s topography, with reference to an ellipsoid, and for the determination of the marine geoid. Satellite altimetry has provided extremely valuable information on ocean science (e.g., circulation surface geostrophic currents, eddy structures, wave heights, and the propagation of oceanic Kelvin and Rossby waves). With more than 25 years of observations, it is also becoming vital to climate research, providing accurate measurements of sea level variations from regional to global scales. Altimetry has also demonstrated a strong potential for geophysica...

Challenges at the Interface of Data Analysis, Computer Science, and Optimization

This volume provides approaches and solutions to challenges occurring at the interface of research fields such as data analysis, computer science, operations research, and statistics. It includes theoretically oriented contributions as well as papers from various application areas, where knowledge from different research directions is needed to find the best possible interpretation of data for the underlying problem situations. Beside traditional classification research, the book focuses on current interests in fields such as the analysis of social relationships as well as statistical musicology.

The enormous progress over the last decades in our understanding of the mechanisms behind the complex system “Earth” is to a large extent based on the availability of enlarged data sets and sophisticated methods for their analysis. Univariate as well as multivariate time series are a particular class of such data which are of special importance for studying the dynamical p- cesses in complex systems. Time series analysis theory and applications in geo- and astrophysics have always been mutually stimulating, starting with classical (linear) problems like the proper estimation of power spectra, which hasbeenputforwardbyUdnyYule(studyingthefeaturesofsunspotactivity) and, later, by John Tuke...
