Facing Diversity in Child Foreign Language Education

This edited book uses the concept of diversity in child foreign language education as a major organizing principle. Since a foreign language, most typically English, is taught globally to an increasing number of children, the variability in the process and varied learning outcomes are inescapable phenomena. This book has been constructed on the premise that heterogeneity, first, concerns young language learners, who due to the disparity in the pace of development need appropriately tailored educational solutions, and, second, it refers to a diversity of contexts in which learning takes place. The contexts can be defined on a macroscale (e.g. different countries), mesoscale (e.g. different in...

This volume provides an up-to-date collection of key aspects related to current preschool bilingual education research from a socio-linguistic perspective. The focus is on preschool bilingual education in multilingual Europe, which is characterized by diverse language models and children's linguistic backgrounds. The book explores the contemporary perspectives on early bilingual education in light of the threefold theoretical framework of child's, teachers', and parents' agencies in interaction in preschool bilingual education. Five significant theoretical concepts are promoted in this volume: the ecology of language learning, an educational partnership for bilingualism, a notion of agency in early language development and education, language-conducive contexts, and language-conducive strategies. The volume examines preschool bilingual education as embedded in specific socio-cultural contexts on the one hand and highlights its universal features on the other. The book is a fundamental read for scholars and students of second language teaching, preschool education, and bilingual education in multilingual and multicultural societies.

Pozwoli lepiej pomyśleć o sobie samym i z uśmiechem wyjść rano do szkoły? Może łatwiej będzie mu lub jej uwierzyć w to, że trudne chwile mijają?

The Eastern religious traditions, especially the varieties of Buddhism, were the last great passion in Thomas Merton's life. His participation in a monastic conference in Asia led to his premature, accidental death. He discoursed on equal terms with the Dalai Lama, and extracts from their interviews appear in this book. The introduction brings together extracts from Merton's "Asian Journal" (Hinduism and varieties of Buddhism), and other short works on Eastern religions written in the last few years of his life. They all combine to demonstrate the breadth of vision that is such an integral part of Merton's lasting appeal, his quest for a deeper unity underlying apparent fragmentation. They might be regarded as steps toward the great book on monasticism that Merton might have written but never did. As they stand, they provide Merton's essential definitions of the religions that so interested him in the last years of his life, and of which he became a skilful Western interpreter.

La 4e de couverture indique : "Dorota Sajewska proposes an innovative perspective for looking back at the formative process of Polish modernity, and delves into repressed areas of experience connected with World War I and the ensuing emancipatory movements. The book shows that underpinning modern Polish nationhood, is both a romantic myth of independence and a horror of fratricidal war. Searching for traces of memory in precarious bodies inflicted with the violence of war, Necroperformance asks us to acknowledge the fragility of life as it actively reinforces an attitude of respect for the right to live. Sajewska's chief objective is to understand the social impact of remains - of the abject body (dead, wounded, disfigured, despoiled by violence) - its place in culture and its agency. These are remains like the body of Rosa Luxemburg, which opens the book's narrative - a woman, a Jew, a Polish-German communist activist who was imprisoned, persecuted, murdered, and desecrated after death. This alternative archive becomes a basis for thought on a new anthropology rooted in the experience of the Great War and recorded in the formule of modern theatre."
