Agricultural Extension and Research

Environmentally Sustainable Development Studies and Monograph Series No. 17. A 1995 publication from the World Bank, Monitoring Environmental Progress: A Report on Work in Progress, generated great interest in the use of indicators to measure the pace and direction of change in environmentally sustainable development. In particular, the attempts to define what it means to be wealthy or poor by recognizing that a countrys wealth is the combination of various forms of capital--produced, natural, and human resources--led to new thinking on what constitutes wealth and how it might be measured. The current document, Expanding the Measure of Wealth: Indicators of Environmentally Sustainable Develo...

Risk and uncertainty are inescapable factors in agriculture which require careful management. Farmers face production risks from the weather, crop and livestock performance, and pests and diseases, as well as institutional, personal and business risks. This revised third edition of the popular textbook includes updated chapters on theory and methods and contains a new chapter discussing the state-contingent approach to the analysis of production and the use of copulas to better model stochastic dependency. Aiming to introduce agricultural decision making, probability and risk preference, this book is an indispensable guide for students and researchers of agriculture and agribusiness management.

Forecasting, Uncertainty, and Public Project Appraisal

A measure of the probability of commodity price forecasts is not necessary for most project analysis, but it does give users a realistic view of the forecast's precision -- and imposes a useful discipline on the forecaster.

Coping with Risk in Agriculture

Risk and uncertainty are inescapable factors in agriculture. Farmers face production risk, from the weather, crop and livestock performance, and pests and diseases, as well as government-controlled institutional risk, and personal or human risk. Together with price or market risks, these constitute business risk which is further related to financial risk. All of these factors must be managed to achieve satisfactory management in agriculture. The aim of this book is to introduce the nature of agricultural decision making under uncertainty, the concept of rational choice and its foundations in theories of probability and risk preference. It also describes methods for the analysis of risky decisions that can be used in agriculture and the preparation of plans for risk management.

The Rise and Fall of Training and Visit Extension

"The paper reviews the origins and evolution of the Training and Visit (T&V) extension system, which was promoted by the World Bank in 1975-98 in over 50 developing countries. The discussion seeks to clarify the context within which the approach was implemented, and to analyze the causes for its lack of sustainability and its ultimate abandonment. The paper identifies some of the challenges faced by the T&V approach as being typical of a large public extension system, where issues of scale, interaction with the agricultural research systems, inability to attribute benefits, weak accountability, and lack of political support tend to lead to incentive problems among staff and managers of exten...

The Analysis of Response in Crop and Livestock Production

The role of the agricultural scientist is to manipulate crop and livestock response phenomena so that they serve society's needs better, enabling countries to obtain full benefit from their agricultural resources. By producing food more efficiently, resources can be made available for non-agricultural development and other needs beyond the essentials of food and fibre. This text provides an introductory outline of the analytical principles involved in appraising the efficiency of crop-fertilizer and livestock-feed response. It provides students of both agricultural science and economics with a simple but formal exposition of the why, how and wherefore of the principles of crop and livestock analysis, thereby helping to further co-operative effort among biological and economic researchers. The third edition has been updated and revised, with additions relating to the principles of modelling, the concept of economic duality as pertinent to response processes, the appraisal of aggregate response, and the economics of response research.

Agricultural Technology

Major complex problems confront agricultural policy analysts and development specialists regarding the broad issue of 'agricultural technology.' These topics are reviewed in this volume which consists of 37 chapters, developed from papers presented at a conference held at Airlie House, Virginia, near Washington DC. The authors include leading international authorities from the academic sector, World Bank and agricultural research centers. The chapters are grouped into six parts. The first introductory part is followed by investment as the focus of Part II. In Part III a variety of conceptual and practical issues involved in the transfer of agricultural technology is considered. Part IV includes discussions of concrete technical matters ranging for example from the general to the specific, from plant to animal, and from soil management to irrigation engineering. Emphasis moves from the specifically technological to wider policy issues in Part V and this latter thrust is carried through into the final summarizing section.
