Ellsworth Kelly: Colors for a Large Wall
Jodi Hauptman examines the procedures and context behind Kelly's formative 1951 abstraction Ellsworth Kelly's landmark 1951 work Colors for a Large Wall is the culmination of an extraordinarily productive moment in the artist's early career, a time when he developed his singular form of abstraction. After serving in the US Army during World War II, he returned to France in 1948 and lived and worked there until 1954. Connecting with artists of an earlier generation, discovering Paris with his peers, and surveying monuments of the past, Kelly began an audacious creative journey in which, paradoxically, he sought to eliminate "invention" from the process of making art. In this volume of the MoMA One on One series, curator Jodi Hauptman looks closely at the evolution of Colors for a Large Wall, unpacking Kelly's toolbox of close observation of the world, chance procedures, collage and the monochrome, and examining his ambition to create art on a public, architectural scale.

Cézanne: Drawing
Cézanne at his most modern: a major career-spanning appraisal of his extraordinarily experimental drawings Although he is most often celebrated as a painter, Paul Cézanne's extraordinary vision was fueled by his experiments on paper. In pencil and watercolor, on individual sheets and across the pages of sketchbooks, the artist described form through multiple probing lines; realized compositions through repetitions and transformations; and conjured kaleidoscopic color through layering of watercolor. It is in these material realities of drawing where we see Cézanne at his most modern: embracing the unfinished, making process visible and actively inviting the viewer to participate in the act of perception. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, this is the most significant effort to date to unite drawings from across Cézanne's entire career, tracing the development of his practice on paper, exploring working methods that transcend subject, and devoting both curatorial and conservation-based research to these remarkable works.
Fernand Léger

Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse is one of the leading figures of modern art. His unparalleled cut-outs are among the most significant of any artist's late works. When ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors as his primary technique to make maquettes for a number of commissions, from books and stained glass window designs to tapestries and ceramics. Taking the form of a 'studio diary', the catalogue re-examines the cut-outs in terms of the methods and materials that Matisse used, and looks at the tensions in the works between finish and process; and drawings and colour.
Drawing from the Modern: 1880-1945
While art history has made room for the flurry of movements that emerged in the period following World War II, the myriad artistic developments of the last thirty years have yet to be assigned firm historical categories. Drawing from the Modern, 1975–2005, the final installment in a series of inaugural-year exhibitions produced by the Department of Drawings, attempts to tell a provisional story of the years from 1975 to the present, as reflected through MoMA's singular drawings collection. While making no claims to comprehensiveness, the installation details both the blossoming of different art positions on a broad, international scale in this era, and the coming of age of drawing as an independent—and for many artists, primary—mode of expression.Organized chronologically and in loose clusters of artists working in the same milieu or vein of interest, the exhibition features works by more than fifty artists, including Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, Martin Kippenberger, Marlene Dumas, Gabriel Orozco, Kara Walker, and Luc Tuymans.
