The People

Names. Everyone has one in one form or another. And every name has a meaning, an origin, and an address. If you have ever been overwhelmed by names and need a scorecard to tell who is who, then your Biblical "who's who" is here. The People includes over 3,400 names. Each name has a meaning, a story and a place in scripture. Some of the chapters in the Bible you never thought would make sense, like Chronicles, are sorted out, and each name is explained. What a blessing!

Knowing Christ in the Challenge of Heresy

The Most Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—uses heresy. On the surface, this is a frightening statement. But through the challenge of Christological heresies, the early church was moved to the task of articulating the faith once for all handed down to the saints. As a result of these heresies, the church realized that it had to lay out biblically, with nuance and precision, who Christ is. This nuance and precision was geared toward answering these heresies with “no,” and resulted in the saints through the ages knowing Jesus better. As it was then, so it is now. The church today, in sync with the Scripture and the apostolic tradition founded upon Jesus, needs in part to articulate biblical Christology in a way that specifically addresses modern-day heresies so that we may know Christ better, more deeply. In Knowing Christ in the Challenge of Heresy, Steven Tsoukalas lays out several modern-day heretical Christologies and answers them biblically with nuance and precision. Readers will not only find a documented cataloguing of specific heresies, but also chapters on Christology found in books of the Bible.

Septuagint: Joel

The Book of Joel is generally considered one of the older surviving books of the Hebrew Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was written, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Joel was written by a prophet called Joel sometime during the ancient kingdoms of Samaria and Judea, although estimates of when he lived vary greatly. The dominant view is that he lived in the 9th-century BC, however, some place his life as late as the 7th-century. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd-century BC, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite Elohim, as w...

1 Corinthians

This compact commentary on 1 Corinthians is both readable and full of insights that will engage students, ministers, and scholars alike. The Apostle Paul writes to a relatively new church in which members are failing to maintain solidarity with other members. They struggle to find their unique place in Roman society as Gentile followers of Jewish leaders that proclaim Christ as Lord. Their many problems include competition over leadership and social prestige, sexual impropriety, household conflicts, idol foods, table fellowship, protocols on gender and the use of spiritual gifts, and confusion about death, immortality, and Christ’s return. Oropeza addresses Paul’s response to these and other issues as he engages ancient biblical, Jewish, and Greco-Roman sources along with recent scholarship. This is a must-read for those who want to understand the Corinthian situation and Paul’s response in a new way.
