Susie has two older sisters: the vivacious Effie, and the elegant Sandra. Life is hard when you're the baby of the family! No one ever lets you do anything. No one ever pays any attention to you. Everyone makes fun of you. Bestselling children's author Susie Morgenstern takes readers back to 1950s Newark and all the everyday charms and heartbreaks of the year she turned ten: spelling bees, synagogue, Christmas lights, Halloween candy, nights out at the movies, sneaking fast food. In his joyous art, Johann G. Louis lovingly evokes the era and a young girl awakening to life.

Early Nineteenth-century German Settlers in Ohio (mainly Cincinnati and Environs), Kentucky, and Other States

Germany immigration authority, Clifford Neal Smith spent a number of years ferreting out surrogate passenger information from the periodical literature. In one instance, Mr. Smith transcribed the genealogical contents, published between 1869 and 1877, of Volumes 1 through 9 of Der Deutsche Pioniere, a monthly magazine issued by the Deutsche Pioniereverein (Union of German Pioneers) founded in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Smith provides the following particulars on each German-American pioneer found in that periodical: name, place of origin in Germany, town or county of residence, reference to the original source, and biographical data provided in the original notice. While most of the early entries pertain to Germanic inhabitants of Ohio, later issues of Der Deutsche Pioniere refer to deceased persons living in Kentucky and neighboring states.

The Strategy of Life

Teleological thinking has been steadfastly resisted by modern biology. And yet, in nearly every area of research biologists are hard pressed to find language that does not impute purposiveness to living forms. The life of the individual organism, if not life itself, seems to make use of a variety of strate gems in achieving its purposes. But in an age when physical models dominate our imagination and when physics itself has become accustomed to uncertainty relations and complementarity, biologists have learned to live with a kind of schizophrenic language, employing terms like 'selfish genes' and 'survival machines' to describe the behavior of organisms as if they were somehow purposive yet ...

The Strategy of Life

A nameless thing in novel's clothing: not coherent enough for fiction, not posing as poetry. A long foreword by Helene Axous (head of the Center of Research in Feminine Studies, U. of Paris) discusses this and other works by Lispector (Brazilian, 1925-1977). Clothbound edition ($19.95) not seen. Reprint. Originally published in 1982 (D. Reidel). Whereas the history of German biology in the early 19th century is usually dismissed as an unfortunate era dominated by arid speculation, Lenoir's study aims to reverse that judgment by showing that a consistent, workable program of research was elaborated by a well-connected group of German biologists.
