"Heart of Stone is a slowly unfolding period romance between a vampire and his inimitably devoted clerk: lushly depicted in flowing, lovingly appended prose, we follow the slow understanding these two men grasp of one another, and the cross of their two worlds into each other's. Henry Coffey, immortal and ever-oscillating between periods of delighted focus upon his current passion project, is charming, witty, and seems utterly incapable of closing his mouth for more than a few moments; in contrast, Theophilus Essex is quiet and keenly focused, adopting an ever-flat affect, but as time goes on, he relaxes in his employer's presence."--Page 4 of cover

Orlando has a thriving accounting practice and more rescue dogs than any reasonable person probably should. He doesn’t need gregarious animal shelter volunteer Noah making puppy dog eyes at him about leaving a sad little canine behind. He probably doesn’t need Noah asking him on a date, either. Allosexuals are usually more trouble than they’re worth. The problem is, puppy dog eyes demonstrably work on Orlando, or he wouldn’t be hip deep in rescue dogs. Also, unlike most people, Noah seems to have at least a couple of clues about asexuality. Hrmph. Maybe it’s worth taking a chance after all? The One He Brought Home is a kisses-only first date short story with middle-aged main characters, grilled cheese sandwiches, and a Happy for Now ending for a tattooed panromantic asexual guy and an allosexual gay man with pink hair. Content warnings are available in the story's front matter and on the author's website.

Evans' analysis of Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments and Concluding Unscientific Postscript introduces even the nonspecialist to two of Kierkegaard's most challenging works without minimizing the complex nature of his philosophy. Evans honors Kierkegaard's wish not to be confused with his pseudonyms and so frames the discussion around the thoughts of "Johannes Climacus." Yet, Evans highlights the similarities between Climacus' and Kierkegaard's ideas while setting them in conversation with contemporary philosophers and theologians. The book is divided into thirteen chapters. The first three set up the book with an introduction to Kierkegaard's pseudonymous literature as a whole, an overv...

The Middle Ages

Since the fifteenth century, when humanist writers began to speak of a “middle” period in history linking their time to the ancient world, the nature of the Middle Ages has been widely debated. Across the millennium from 500 to 1500, distinguished historian Johannes Fried describes a dynamic confluence of political, social, religious, economic, and scientific developments that draws a guiding thread through the era: the growth of a culture of reason. “Fried’s breadth of knowledge is formidable and his passion for the period admirable...Those with a true passion for the Middle Ages will be thrilled by this ambitious defensio.” —Dan Jones, Sunday Times “Reads like a counterblast ...
