In 1982 an English translation of Johannes Trithemius's Steganographia was published for the public by Adam McLean. The issue with McLean's translation was that the entirety of Book 2 was missing which made it "incomplete". Although Book 2 is mostly an earlier version of part of the Lesser Key of Solomon, or Lemegeton, the reality was that the Steganographia had never been translated in "full". This translation is not attempting to counter any current translations that have come in recent years. Instead, this translation's purpose is to show where many beliefs that are practiced in church and religious circles are really coming from. While many have attempted to argue that these practices ar...

The ideas of philosophers (Ficino, Pico, Della Porta, Bruno) on magic interfered with popular alternative and witchcraft rites. This book focuses on "wandering scholastics" (Trithemius, Agrippa, Paracelsus, Bruno) and will be a stimulating read for all those interested in Renaissance mentality.

The Art of Drawing Spirits Into Crystals

Trithemius is best known for his hidden writing- the infamous Steganographia, but his other works, including this short grimoire on the use of crystals in summoning celestial spirits, are no less potent. Through the use of a simple wand, pedestal, lamen, and a polished and clear crystal, Trithemius states that it is possible to manifest and converse with celestial forces and to constrain them through the use of simple invocation and prayer.

Illustrious Authors of the Order of St. Benedict

The love of learning and the cultivation of a literary culture are central to the charism of Benedictine monasticism, and the Order of St. Benedict has produced countless illustrious authors over its fifteen centuries of existence. Indeed, throughout the Middle Ages, Benedictine monasteries functioned as the primary repositories of knowledge and the leading centers of learning for all Western Europe. In his Illustrious Authors of the Order of St. Benedict, the great early Renaissance abbot and polymath Johannes Trithemius compiled a catalogue of the outstanding writers of the order, from its inception in the early sixth century until the end of the fifteenth century. This magisterial and much-respected work of reference, which has not hitherto been available in English, provides not only encyclopedic biographical and bibliographic data on each Benedictine author, but is punctuated by many striking and illuminating anecdotes and observations. Moreover, it provides profound reflections on monastic life, values, and culture, and an insight into Trithemius's own remarkable personality and vision for his order.

The Faustian Century

New essays revealing the enduring significance of the story made famous in the 1587 Faustbuch and providing insights into the forces that gave the sixteenth century its distinct character. The Reformation and Renaissance, though segregated into distinct disciplines today, interacted and clashed intimately in Faust, the great figure that attained European prominence in the anonymous 1587 Historia von D. Johann Fausten. The original Faust behind Goethe's great drama embodies a remote culture. In his century, Faust evolved from an obscure cipher to a universal symbol. The age explored here as "the Faustian century" invested the Faustbuch and its theme with a symbolic significance still of excep...

De Septem Secundeis

Johannes Trithemius is best known for his steganographia, but his less notorious works are no less interesting. Here, in de septem secundeis, we have a fusion of history and occultism, regarding celestial and angelic categorizations, used to predict the future as well as correspond past events to the different characteristics of the secondary causes- the seven angels with their seven planets. Trithemius, in his age, thus delivered this knowledge to then-emperor Maximilian of the Holy Roman Empire, and this same system can be expanded infinitely into the past or future.
