Journal of Capt. Alexander Chesney
Alexander Chesney, along with his parents and siblings, came from County Antrim, Ireland in 1772 with the Rev. William Martin and his five ship loads of Protestants. The Chesney family settled alongside kinsmen on the Pacolet River in the Up-Country of South Carolina. Chesney established a plantation and also became involved in freighting mountain produce and lumber to the coastal region of Carolina. He remained loyal to the British government in the American Revolution and was chosen by Maj. Patrick Ferguson, one of the two independent British commanders in the South, to be his adjutant in the American Volunteers. Greenville
Since the Cherokee Nation hunted the verdant hills in what is now known as Greenville County, South Carolina, the search for economic prosperity and diversity has defined the history of this thriving Upstate region and its expanding urban center. In a sweeping chronicle of the city and county, historian Archie Vernon Huff traces Greenville's business tradition and details its political, religious, and cultural evolution. Uzal Johnson, Loyalist Surgeon
The original diary of Dr. Uzal Johnson, surgeon to the command of Major Patrick Ferguson, has been housed for years at Princeton University, rarely seen by historians. Now, for the first time, the diary has been edited and published for scholars and the general public. In 1780, Johnson was chosen by Ferguson to become the surgeon of the American Volunteers, a Provincial Loyalist unit. The diary details Johnson's service and experiences in the Carolinas from 5 March 1780 to 7 March 1781. Johnson's diary makes it possible to trace the exact route of Ferguson from his entry into South Carolina to his death in the battle of Kings Mountain. Johnson gives details about that battle never before revealed. In addition, Johnson provides a rare look at the military events from the viewpoint of a royal subject. His experiences provide facts and impressions which increases the understanding of the war in the Carolinas.
