If we learn the lesson of this tragedy, we shall lose no time in getting back to first principles. We shall reintroduce in all future passenger ships those simple and effective elements of safety-the double skin, the longitudinal bulkhead, and the watertight deck-which were conspicuous in the Great Eastern, and which alone can render such a ship as the Titanic unsinkable.

Evolution of an Academic Department

The health-care industry and its professional practice are currently in uncertain times as the outcome of the hotly debated health-care reform is awaited. While the magnitude of potential change may be unchallenged, the past century has been one of continual change for the medical profession and its practice. The rapidity of this change has continually increased with emerging new technologies and changes in the social fabric of society. Even the doctor-patient relationship has changed. Medicine as a profession and the specialties within it have had to adapt to this change in order to be relevant to the physicians it trains, the patients they treat, and to maintain status among their peers. This book chronicles the history of the successful adaptation to required changes in one medical-school department.

The Cambridge Companion to War Writing

War writing is an ancient genre that continues to be of vital importance. Times of crisis push literature to its limits, requiring writers to exploit their expressive resources to the maximum in response to extreme events. This Companion focuses on British and American war writing, from Beowulf and Shakespeare to bloggers on the 'War on Terror'. Thirteen period-based chapters are complemented by five thematic chapters and two chapters charting influences. This uniquely wide range facilitates both local and comparative study. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field and includes suggestions for further reading. A chronology illustrates how key texts relate to major conflicts. The Companion also explores the latest theoretical thinking on war representation to give access to this developing area and to suggest new directions for research. In addition to students of literature, the volume will interest those working in war studies, history, and cultural studies.

The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters

This is one of the first and most famous books published after the sinking of the Titanic, and contains much material from contemporary newspaper accounts. It was written by Logan Howard-Smith (under the pen name of Logan Marshall), an editor who specialized in the rapid publication of books about current events. For this book, his crowning achievement, the initial print run was for no fewer than 110,000 copies. The publisher achieved this by running 11 presses simultaneously, and the books were then sold door-to-door across America for a dollar apiece. Although Marshall's own description of the sinking is melodramatic and sensationalistic, the many verbatim interviews with survivors of the disaster have stood the test of time, and are often cited in Titanic literature.

The Truth About the Titanic

The Truth About the Titanic

Although he survived the sinking by seven months, it was the Titanic that killed Colonel Archibald Gracie. His struggles in the icy waters of the North Atlantic had shattered his constitution, and the awful things he had seen on that fateful night left him a haunted man. One observer said he had the look of someone "who had descended as distinctly into hell as any human being would care to acknowledge, and had risen again from the dead." Nevertheless he tried to make sense of his experiences, and this book was published soon after his death. The first half is his own account of the sinking, and shows how he had to be both lucky and strong just to live through the night. In the second half he tells the individual stories of each of the Titanic's lifeboats, summarizing the bare facts and then providing dramatic survivor accounts, from personal interviews and from testimony given to the British and American inquiries into the disaster. In its author's desperate search for the truth, this book remains one of the most powerful works on the sinking of the Titanic.
