Little Fox Goes to the End of the World

One day, while chasing a butterfly, Little Fox strayed farther and farther from her home. "Come back, Little Fox, " called her mother, "or you may get lost." But Little Fox was tired of playing near the mouth of her den. "Some day, " she said, "I'm going to travel to the end of the world." "Oh, " said her mother. "Is the end of the world very far?" As Little Fox's imagination soars, she tells her mother how she will outsmart bears, tigers, elephants, monkeys, and even crocodiles. But finally, she'll sail home, because "I shall miss you." The text, originally published in 1976, assumes new life with fresh illustrations by Laura J. Bryant.

Story time at the public library is the first exposure to books outside the home for many preschool children. For the librarian, it is an exciting opportunity to instill in youngsters a love of reading and books. But coming up with new ideas that hold the children’s attention can be trying. Until now. Here are 55 tried-and-true story hour programs with a thematic approach. All are highly flexible and adaptable across the full preschool age range. Most of the ideas are arranged under one of eight specific themes that include four to eight one-hour programs: barnyard animals, the Caldecott Medal, colors, families, a storytelling feast, the five senses, reptiles and amphibians, and around the world. There are also 18 individual holiday and seasonal programs. All story hours provide ideas for name tags, suggested audiovisual materials, recommended story, poetry and song selections, additional titles and a full description of the activity.

Creating Reading Rainbow

Reading Rainbow is one of the most successful PBS children’s series in television history, earning numerous national and international awards including 26 Emmys and a Peabody Award. But perhaps more important than anything else, Reading Rainbow helped generations of children cultivate a love for books. Reading Rainbow is very much a story of humble beginnings and enormous perseverance. Over five summers, Tony Buttino Sr. and his colleagues at WNED-TV, the public television station in Buffalo, New York, worked in collaboration with educators and librarians to experiment with summer reading programs. But after trialing these programs, the WNED team realized there was a big need for a new chi...
