Poets Laureate in the Holy Roman Empire
Between 1355 and 1806 the title of Poet Laureate was bestowed on around 1500 persons in the territories of the Holy Roman Empire. In some cases the title was conferred by the Emperor himself, on his own initiative or in response to a petitioner. In others the title was granted by a count palatine acting upon the Emperor's behalf, but an even larger number had the title bestowed on them by various German universities exercising this privilege under the Emperor's authority. The lives and publications of 1340 of these poets were detailed in the four-volume Poets Laureate in the Holy Roman Empire: A Bio-bibliographical Handbook published in 2006. This supplementary volume provides similar information about some 130 further poets who have come to light since that work was published. Furthermore, it updates, augments and - where necessary - corrects details relating to the poets covered in the previous volumes. In particular, it includes extensive new information about the two dozen women poets who were laureated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Record Floods of Greater Nashville: Including Flooding in Middle Tennessee (TN) and Western Kentucky (KY), May 1-4- 2010
On May 1-2, 2010, record-breaking rains struck KY and the TN Valley region. Western and Middle TN were hardest hit with local amounts of 18-20 inches to the south and west of Greater Nashville. Much of western and Middle TN, incl. Greater Nashville, experienced widespread, devastating flash flooding, as well as unprecedented flooding along the Cumberland river and its tributaries. The Nat. Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin. formed a service assessment team to evaluate the Nat. Weather Service (NWS) performance before and during the catastrophic flooding. Floods of January and February 1980 in California
During January and February 1980, storms caused substantial rises in streamflow throughout much of California. In mid-January flooding occurred in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and in the central coast area. In late January and mid-February, high floodflows in streams in coastal southern California caused much damage and several deaths. The Tijuana River in northern Baja California and southern San Diego County flooded many square miles of lowlands as its flow during two separate flooding episodes exceeded all records. Most reservoirs in San Diego County spilled, several for the first time since their completion. Lake Elsinore, in eastern Riverside County, caused damage to lakeside property as it filled to an elevation not reached since 1916. February flooding in southern California was caused by a series of storms separated by short intervals. Some peaks of record were observed, and streamflow throughout the area remained high for a relatively long period. In many streams, the volume of sustained flow for periods of 7 and 15 consecutive days were the greatest that have occurred during the period of record.
