One rainy October day, the Ridgway family embarked on a remarkable adventure, fulfilling a dream that rarely becomes reality for armchair travellers. Leaving behind the challenges of running their School of Adventure in a remote corner of north-west Scotland, the Ridgways and their crew sailed away from the rocky peninsula that had been their home for the last 25 years. Their 57ft ketch, ENGLISH ROSE VI, became a magic carpet, taking them anywhere the wind blew on an extraordinary voyage, across the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean and back home again via Antarctica. They visited South Sea island paradises and remote Andean villages, and braved windswept Patagonian wildernesses and fierce ocean storms. They also endured the trials and tensions of domestic life in a confined space, and awaited a very special family reunion for their adopted daughter Isso, returning to her native Peruvian jungle for the first time.

For the architectural tourist, one of Cheshire's greatest delights is the use of timber. Chester, whose famous rows with their upper walkways are unique in medieval Europe, continues the timber-framed tradition in its riotous Victorian buildings but glories also in its Roman past.

A mind-blowing adventure into a literary fourth dimension: part noir, part London snapshot, all unsettlingly amazing Hawthorn and his partner, Child, are called to the scene of a mysterious shooting in North London. The only witness is unreliable, the clues are scarce, and the victim, a young man who lives nearby, swears he was shot by a ghost car. While Hawthorn battles with fatigue and strange dreams, the crime and the narrative slip from his grasp and the stories of other Londoners take over: a young pickpocket on the run from his boss; an editor in possession of a disturbing manuscript; a teenage girl who spends her days at the Tate Modern; a pack of wolves; and a madman who has been infected by the former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Haunting these disparate lives is the shadowy figure of Mishazzo, an elusive crime magnate who may be running the city, or may not exist at all.
