Handbook of Mouse Mutations with Skin and Hair Abnormalities presents 48 mouse mutations that are all available to the biomedical community. Many of the mouse mutations with dermatological diseases are reviewed and illustrated in detail. This popular reference book gives you a single source to use when determining which mouse mutation will best serve your needs as a biomedical tool for sophisticated research projects. The book also includes an overview of domestic animal genodermatoses to provide alternatives to mouse models that do not exist or to complement those that do. A detailed section written by renowned experts compares the biology of human and mouse skin and skin diseases in the areas of development and the use of animal models, mammalian genetics, keratin biochemistry, epidermal and hair follicle cycles and kinetics, cytokines and growth factors, keratinocyte culture systems, cutaneous carcinogenesis, cutaneous immune system, and skin changes associated with mutations of the endocrine system.

Experts from The Jackson Laboratory and around the world provide practical advice on everything from how to establish a colony to where to go for specific mutations. The book includes information on medical photography, grafting procedures, and how to map the genes and evaluate the special biological characteristics of mice. It also discusses how to maintain a colony of mice that breed with difficulty, how to approach mapping spontaneous mutations, how to set up systems to evaluate a specific antibody, how to perform simple measurements that yield a large amount of information, and how to access mouse informatics on the Web.

Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice

An updated and comprehensive reference to pathology in every organ system in genetically modified mice The newly revised and thoroughly updated Second Edition of Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice delivers a comprehensive resource for pathologists and biomedical scientists tasked with identifying and understanding pathologic changes in genetically modified mice. The book is organized by body system, includes descriptions and explanations of a wide range of findings, as well as hundreds of color photographs illustrating both common and rare lesions that may be found in genetically engineered and wild type mice. The book is written by experienced veterinary and medical p...

Completion of the first phase of the Human Genome Project has presented scientists with a mountain of new information. The availability of all human genes and their locations is exciting, but their mechanisms of action and interaction with other genes are often unknown. Certain variations in the environment and characteristics of human genes make i

Transform Your Computer Monitor into a Virtual Microscope The world's leading expert on mouse embryology, Dr. Matthew Kaufman is responsible for producing classic texts that are considered the most respected in the field. While the quality of their photowork at the time was considered state-of-the-art, the technology available when the books were produced limited the original printed pages to black-and-white photomicrographs and line diagrams, which are too small and not detailed enough to meet the requirements of today's mouse pathologists who demand high resolution, high detailed full color slides. Meeting this need and going beyond, Histologic Basis of Mouse Endocrine System Development: ...

Diseases, the second volume in the four volume set, The Mouse in Biomedical Research, departs from the first edition, by discussing specific disease causing microorganisms, rather than the format used in the first edition which discussed infectious diseases affecting specific organs and tissues. As such, the volume consists of 26 chapters subdivided into RNA viruses and DNA viruses, as well as bacterial, mycotic, and parasitic infections. These chapters not only provide updates on pathogenesis, epidemiology and prevention of previously recognized murine pathogens, but also include information on newly recognized disease-causing organisms: mouse parvovirus, cilia associated respiratory bacilli and Helicobacter spp. A separate category, consisting of 3 chapters, discusses zoonoses, tumor pathology of genetically engineered mice, and spontaneous diseases in commonly used mouse strains.
