Miraculous is a compelling memoir about tragedy, grief, and disaster that unfolds with a heavenly variation. Colette, the eldest sibling who attends a university in Australia, is reeling from the excitement of her first day, on the 13th of February 2007, when in broad daylight, is fatally struck by a car. The victim was declared brain dead, sustained traumatic brain injuries, and was in critical condition after falling into a coma.
As war raged in 1940s Europe, Gemma Galgani, a young and beautiful Italian girl, was made a saint - the first to have lived in the 20th Century: she died in 1903. Born into the "modern world", her life of goodness and suffering, together with her writings of the love of God, have left a role model of Christian living for many young people living in this secular age. She carried the five wounds of Christ and is considered by many a visionary and mystic.
Our contemporary moment is preoccupied with arbitrating ‘reality’. With the spectre of buzzwords like ‘fake news’ and ‘post-truth’ we find a scramble to locate or fix some sort of universal ‘real’ beneath what are positioned as ‘fake’ articulations. To engage with this crisis, this collection argues for the importance of a new conjuncture in communication and cultural studies of media. Building on Hall’s understanding of ‘conjuncture’ as a way of grasping moments within hegemonic struggle, the essays suggest that the current moment requires a revitalization of the concept of conjuncture.
