The Lost Civil War Diary of John Rigdon King

On a crisp fall day in October of 1862, a precocious seventeen-year-old boy went into a bookshop in his hometown of Hagerstown, Maryland, and purchased a composition book. Into his new diary, John R. King would steadfastly record what he did, saw and heard daily, as the Civil War raged around him. During May of 1862, after learning the photography trade, John took portraits of Union soldiers stationed in the Shenandoah Valley. Then, on May 23, 1862, when he heard the sounds of battle, he attempted to flee on a wagon. He was soon captured by Stonewall Jackson's troops. His treasured diary was taken. Force marched to a Confederate prison, John vowed revenge. Two weeks after escaping from captivity, John joined the Union Army. He fought with fury, courage and valor, was wounded three times and became a war hero. Later, John was not only appointed by two presidents to prestigious positions in the Pension Bureau, but he also became leader of the Grand Army of the Republic. After being lost for 150 years, his diary was recently discovered and is now being published.

The Rigdon Family Album

From a college president who wrote books on English grammar to sharecrop farmers who couldn't read or write... From the foothills of Pennsylvania to the swamps of south Georgia... From an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1844, to a member of a highly successful rock band in the 1980's... Dreamers all... a lot of preachers, a few doctors, a handful of attorneys - but mostly just rock solid middle class folks who never quite made it to the right place at the right time. We were there in 1829 when gold was discovered in Dahlonega, GA... We were there in 1849 when the wild dash was made to California. We were some of the first to lose it all in Alaska... and at least one of us struck it bi...

Say It Like a True Scotsman

Every year over 15 million tourists visit Scotland to sample its renowned hospitality, breathtaking scenery, a game played with a ball and club called golf, a monster often spotted in a lake, and more importantly, the whisky. But, if there's one thing that leaves visitors utterly scoobied, it's what the Scots have done to a language they were led to believe was English. Say It Like A True Scotsman is a different kind of phrase book. While most phrase books focus on identifying common situations and objects one is likely to encounter as a tourist, this book focuses on the exquisite vocabulary and pronunciation that make up the Scots language. Here you'll find a collection of Scottish sayings and proverbs along with their English translation and interpretation.

Scottish Gaelic / English Dictionary

In an area the size of Alabama we have a half-dozen "lesser" languages spanning the northern half of the United Kingdom, all dominated by English, but both historically, and orthographically having little in common and they are to a large part mutually unintelligible. Scottish Gaelic is closely related to Manx and Irish (Gaelic) and was brought to Scotland around the 4th century AD by the Scots from Ireland. Scottish Gaelic is also distantly related to Welsh (Cymraeg), Cornish (Kernewek) and Breton (Brezhoneg), which form the Brythonic branch of the Celtic languages, also known as P-Celtic. The Celtic languages all have a similar grammatical structure, but have relatively little vocabulary i...
