Prior to 1862, when the Department of Agriculture was established, the report on agriculture was prepared and published by the Commissioner of Patents, and forms volume or part of volume, of his annual reports, the first being that of 1840. Gideon Lyman (1758-1824) was born in Northfield, Massachusetts, the son of Gideon Lyman and Eunice Clark. He married Dolly Spencer (1764/65- 1844), the daughter of Jeremiah Spencer and Elizabeth Shailor. They lived in Weathersfield, Vermont, where their eleven children were born. The family moved to Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, in 1803.
Thomas Dickerman and his wife, Ellen, came to Dorchester Massachusetts ca. 1636. He died there in 1657. Early descendants lived in Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut and then spread throughout the U.S.
