The Cambridge Companion to Keats

In The Cambridge Companion to Keats, leading scholars discuss Keats's work in several fascinating contexts: literary history and key predecessors; Keats's life in London's intellectual, aesthetic and literary culture and the relation of his poetry to the visual arts. These specially commissioned essays are sophisticated but accessible, challenging but lucid, and are complemented by an introduction to Keats's life, a chronology, a list of contemporary people and periodicals, a source reference for famous phrases and ideas articulated in Keats's letters, a glossary of literary terms and a guide to further reading.

Imagining Holiness

Hasidic tales are often read as charming, timeless expressions of Jewish spirituality. The best-known versions of these stories, however, have been rewritten for audiences outside traditional Judaism and few works have explored Hasidic tales as they were created by Hasidic Jews.

The Art of Artificial Intelligence

The Art of Artificial Intelligence

What is artificial intelligence to us today? This book tackles this question from a somewhat unique perspective, that of art. The starting hypothesis is that art can provide an example of how we can engage with artificial intelligence without being subjugated by it. The Art of Artificial Intelligence: Philosophical Keywords guides the reader through a theoretical journey that begins, each time, with a particular work of art: visual artworks, but also literary texts and theatrical performances. Each chapter is anchored by a philosophical keyword: "work," "author," "time," "memory," "human." What meanings do these words take on in light of these new practices? The book is aimed at a broad audience, including anyone who feels the need to reflect on these new questions. It will also be an essential resource for students and university faculty in various disciplines, from philosophy to media studies, from art history to visual culture.

The Voluble Soul

“The world’s fair beauty set my soul on fire.” In this first study of the full range of Traherne’s poetry Richard Willmott explains his ‘metaphysical’ poetry to all who are attracted by the beauty of his language, but puzzled by his meaning. He offers guidance both for the student of English, uncertain about Traherne’s theological ideas, and the student of theology, put off by seventeenth-century poetic conventions and diction. Using a wealth of quotation, he examines Traherne’s verse alongside that of a variety of his contemporaries, including Andrew Marvell, Lucy Hutchinson, Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor. Central to Traherne’s poetry and generous theology is his delig...

Governing Charities

Maurutto details how welfare bureaucracies, as they began to expand during the 1930s and 1940s, did so by building stronger links with private voluntary agencies, not by disabling them. Far from being shunted aside, voluntary organizations such as Catholic charities became increasingly entrenched within the expanding welfare state. Standardized reports, state inspections, financial audits, and social work case records, to name only a few, were emblematic of the social scientific impulse that permeated the operations of Catholic charities and enabled them to more systematically police, discipline, and regulate the lives of relief recipients and those designated as moral and social "deviants." Notably, they allowed church authorities and the state to exercise greater control and supervision over the internal operations and procedures of charities, in effect enabling these institutions to govern the daily affairs of the voluntary sector.

Missionary Oblate Sisters

Bruno-Jofré draws extensively from private archives and oral histories to bring to light the inner life of the congregation and their educational work. She demonstrates that the Sisters played an important role in building a French Canadian identity in Manitoba and Quebec and provides a glimpse into their complex relationship with the Oblate Fathers including their role as auxiliaries in the residential schools.
