A Round Indiana

Rounds barns are architectural phenomena that have graced rural America for over a century. Today the few that survive stand as symbols of another generation’s innovation and ingenuity. To understand the importance of these buildings is to begin to understand the story of farming in America. A Round Indiana: Round Barns in the Hoosier State, Second Edition documents the 265 round barns identified in the history of Indiana. This book contains more than 300 modern and historical photographs alongside nearly 40 line drawings and plans. Author and award-winning photographer John T. Hanou combed through often-forgotten documents to tell the fascinating story of the farmers, builders, and architects who championed the innovative construction techniques. This second edition of A Round Indiana provides updated information on an additional 39 round barns discovered in Indiana’s history. Of the 265 total round barns found at one time on the plains of Indiana, only 72 remain standing. A Round Indiana is a tribute to the state’s endangered buildings and a work to be treasured by those interested in the history of Indiana, architecture, and agriculture.

Mourning Blooms is a two volume series. This book is Volume I. Reproduced here are many of my photographs of flowers taken around grave sites. Most often the flowers are artificial, but some are real, but most of these are dried out. As a new feature, I have added various quotes by famous people on flowers and mourning – the impetus in coming up with the name of this book. As with my previous books, The Angel of Angel Hill and Light is Life, I strive to share my excitement and love of photography with the reader. This is the third and fourth of several books all which will show my taphophile interest in graveyards, cemetery stones, and other monuments. John T. Hanou 2009

Specialists from John Hopkins say the tumor was one of the fastest growing tumors they have ever seen or had read about. They requested permission to study Lilly's brain and permission was granted. This book imortalizes Lilly and her wake, which was a celebration of her life by her friends and family.

Broken Dreams is a compilation of photographs that I have shot since 2008 of shattered and disfigured automobile windows taken mostly in junkyards that dot the nation. The name of this book, Broken Dreams, is apparent. The muddled, stained, shattered and broken glass windows were at one time part of someone's dream car, or from a company vehicle proudly showing the company's logo and advertising or perhaps it is a broken window from a school bus where many kids dreamed of going fishing and not going to school. When looking at the photographs presented in this book, one may think, what the heck? What am I looking at? Are you sure this is glass? It is amazing that when given time, nature has the ability to alter man-made objects into works of art. This is so present in auto junkyards if only one looks for it. Believe me, it is there.

Everybody has at least one weird hobby. As for me, I decided to use this book as a medium for taking a satirical look at the phenomena known as "upskirt." According to Wikipedia, "Upskirt refers to the practice of making unauthorized photographs under a woman's skirt...." "The term "upskirt" can also refer to a video, or illustration which incorporates an upskirt image. The term is also sometimes used to refer generically to any voyeur photography - that is, catching an image of somebody unaware in a private moment." "Furthermore, 'the practice is regarded as a form of sexual fetishism or voyeurism and is similar in nature to downblouse. The ethical and legal issue relating to upskirt and downblouse photography is one of a reasonable expectation of privacy, even in a public place.'" So I figured that mannequins, simple dummies and plastic models, wouldn't mind my making some innocent fun of this serious subject. This much I promise you, one day mannequins will take over this planet...

According to Christians, Jesus died as part of a divine plan to save humanity and, after His death, He rose to life again. The Cross and the Crucifix define Christianity as it symbolizes all that Christians believe in. For over 2,000 years Christians across the world have meditated upon, written about, created art and thanked God for the wonder of the Cross and Crucifix. Its presence is a photographer's dream. Culled from more than 150 images, this book presents 70 photographs I have taken in various cemeteries over the last 13 years which embody the theme: "The Crucifixion of Jesus". These photographic reproductions were taken in mostly Catholic cemeteries in the United States, Mexico, Braz...

I have been infatuated with cemeteries, their stones, decorations, and epitaphs for many years now. My love for cemeteries, I cannot explain. They have a certain mysteriousness that makes each one unique and beautiful. Their individuality is profound. Cemeteries contain a treasure trove of photo possibilities and provide a wealth of subject matter. Over the years, my photographic vision has changed from the basic to the insightful – thanks to my love of the medium and the invention of digital photography and computer programs like Photoshop. Currently, I am working on a personal project of photographing all of the cemeteries in the major cities of North America. One day I hope to expand my travels to other regions of this world, but this of course, will take time.

For 32 years I have been visiting and photographing this beautiful and mysterious family cemetery. The Angel is located in a field south of Vallonia in southern Indiana. This picturesque, tiny graveyard sits atop a hill, surrounded by a wrought iron fence overlooking 35 grave sites of the Henry G. Smith family and his relatives. Smith Cemetery has an interesting, if not colorful history. Considered a historical marker, it has long been a conversation piece and the substance of great speculation. This book describes the speculation and, through my photographic eye, more than explores the monument's life over the past 32 years.

Of the many graveyards I have visited over the years and the numerous cemetery themes that have developed as result, none have had a greater effect on me than graves with pictures of the deceased on them or associated with them. They are forgotten faces from the past. Some faces are old, some in mid-life, some young and others too young. A few are postmortem. These portraits are exemplified on the early 20th century ceramic pictures and oval photo porcelain plaques. More recently the faces are shown on faded color and/or black and white photos with the latest craze of being idolized on laser etched granite stones. Even colored ceramic pictures are making a comeback. In today's world, ceramic ...
