Chiefly, an autobiography of John Penman that was written in the Utah State Penitentiary between February 1886 and February 1887. He was born near Crossgates, Scotland on February 1, 1835. He was the son of Richard Penman (b. 1810) and Cathrine Paterson (b. 1809). He began working in the coal mines at age 11 or 12 with his father. He married Isabella Hutchison (b. 1838) on June 1, 1857. They both joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1862 in Scotland. They sailed from Liverpool to New York City on June 1, 1863. They arrived in Salt Lake City on October 13, 1863.
