Contemporary accounts of welfare state change have produced conflicting findings and incompatible theoretical explanations. By discussing the most salient aspects of the 'dependent variable problem', this work offers suggestions as to how the problem might be tackled within empirical cross-national analyses of modern welfare states.

Innovative Comparative Methods for Policy Analysis aims to provide a decisive push to the further development and application of innovative and specific comparative methods for the improvement of policy analysis. To take on this challenge, this volume brings together methodologists and specialists from a broad range of social scientific disciplines and policy fields. The work further develops methods for systematic comparative cases analysis in a small-N research design, with a key emphasis laid on policy-oriented applications. The Knowledge Triangle programme was initiated by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2011 with the aim to study and promote knowledge transfer between innovation actors in academia, industry and public sectors of the Nordic countries. Networks of relevant actors were established in key thematic areas to facilitate a systematic and sustainable model of cooperation with the long-term ambition to stimulate economic growth in the Nordic countries. In 2012, the programme was extended to include both Nordic and Chinese innovation actors. This publication is a collective work of partners of the Knowledge Triangle programme and provides an overview of the Nordic and Sino-Nordic networks.
