La Peau de chagrin (De huid van chagrijn) is de eerste echt grote roman van Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850): het met bewondering ontvangen boek maakte van de veelbelovende debutant in de letteren een geacheveerde schrijver. Hoofdpersoon in deze "filosofische studie" van de Menselijke Komedie is Raphaël de Valentin. De jongeman begeerd, net als Balzac, alles: roem, geld en vrouwen. Zo wordt hij gefascineerd door de beeldschone, doch ongenaakbare Foedora, het idool van heel mannelijk Parijs. Raphaël beseft dat zijn begeertes en ambities zijn levenskrachten ondermijnen: zijn talisman, het magische stuk chagrijnleer, krimpt immers in bij elke vervulling daarvan. La Peau de chagrin belicht het cynische individualisme van de bourgeoismaatschappij zoals die rond 1830 opkwam en die ook nu nog dezelfde kenmerken heeft: corruptie, hypocrisie en winstbejag.
