Contentious Rituals

Throughout the world, divisive monuments, ceremonies, and processions assert and reinforce claims to territory, legitimacy, and dominance. These contested symbols and rituals strengthen and lend meaning to communal boundaries; confer and renew identities; and inflame tensions between groups, polarizing communities and, at times, triggering violence. In Contentious Rituals, Jonathan S. Blake focuses on one such controversial tradition: Protestant parades in the streets of Northern Ireland. Marchers say they are celebrating their culture and commemorating their history, as they have done for two centuries. Catholics see the parades as carnivals of bigotry and strident assertions of power. The ...

Sergeant Peter Henry Blaskey, later named Blake, was a Lancaster bomber pilot and was shot down in 1942. He was interrogated and imprisoned in Camp 344, Stalag 8b, Lamsdorf. he remained a prisoner of war for over two years. He was then force marched over 600 miles across Europe by the Germans, during which he was mock executed as a punishment after searching for food. He endured sub zero temperatures and witnessed the deaths of hundreds of prisoners who starved or froze to death. He kept a diary for the first 10 months of his captivity that he carried with him on the long march and that is now published for the first time. Just before he died, Peter joined a pilgrimage, organised by the Royal British Legion, of former prisoners returning to Lamsdorf for the first time. You can watch a 30 minute documentary on YouTube about the journey - 'Archbishop Jonathan Blake - The Heroes Return'.

Ted Hughes

Ted Hughes, Poet Laureate, was one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. He was one of Britain’s most important poets. With an equal gift for poetry and prose, he was also a prolific children’s writer and has been hailed as the greatest English letterwriter since John Keats. His magnetic personality and insatiable appetite for friendship, love, and life also attracted more scandal than any poet since Lord Byron. His lifelong quest to come to terms with the suicide of his first wife, Sylvia Plath, is the saddest and most infamous moment in the public history of modern poetry. Hughes left behind a more complete archive of notes and journals than any other major poet, including thousands of pages of drafts, unpublished poems, and memorandum books that make up an almost complete record of Hughes’s inner life, which he preserved for posterity. Renowned scholar Jonathan Bate has spent five years in the Hughes archives, unearthing a wealth of new material. His book offers, for the first time, the full story of Hughes’s life as it was lived, remembered, and reshaped in his art.

That Old Devil Called God Again

Religion has brought the world to the brink of meltdown. That Old Devil Called God Again shows how defenceless we are from the invading power of religious indoctrination, to which Jesus fell victim. From childhood, like unprotected computers, the predatory viruses of other people’s beliefs and dogmas invade us until we emerge as adults unaware of how we have been infected. The Rwandan genocide, Omagh, 9/11, suicide bombings, Westgate and the Syrian carnage join the indictments against 'God'. Religion stands charged with contaminating our cultural development and impeding our moral aspirations. This book gives us a chance to carry out a thorough virus scan, to discover who we really are, be given the chance to think anew and choose our beliefs. The toxic nature of religious teaching is exposed and our basic assumptions and ideas are challenged with fresh and radical thinking that empowers and liberates us to become more fully human. While laying siege to religion, this book yet presents a passionate and positive call for a full and creative engagement with life and a vibrant spirituality.
