Twelve Lies That Hold America Captive

The president is not the Messiah, the Constitution is not the Bible, and the United States is not a city on a hill or the hope for the world. Jonathan Walton exposes the cultural myths and misconceptions about America's identity, showing how our notions of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are at odds with the call to take up our cross and follow Jesus. Discover how the kingdom of God offers true freedom and justice for all.

An analysis of African American televangelists as cultural icons Through their constant television broadcasts, mass video distributions, and printed publications, African American religious broadcasters have a seemingly ubiquitous presence in popular culture. They are on par with popular entertainers and athletes in the African American community as cultural icons even as they are criticized by others for taking advantage of the devout in order to subsidize their lavish lifestyles. For these reasons questions abound. Do televangelists proclaim the message of the gospel or a message of greed? Do they represent the "authentic" voice of the black church or the Christian Right in blackface? Does the phenomenon reflect orthodox "Christianity" or ethnocentric "Americaninity" wrapped in religious language? Watch This! seeks to move beyond such polarizing debates by critically delving into the dominant messages and aesthetic styles of African American televangelists and evaluating their ethical implications.

Beauty and Resistance

How can you pursue justice, work toward a renewed world, and sustain your faith without burning out? Beauty and Resistance is a call to rest for weary activists, justice advocates, and believers who long for a life of consistent peace and abundant purpose. Grounded in the conviction that God doesn't intend for you to live in chronic exhaustion and burnout, Jonathan Walton outlines a path that relies on the structure and support of a rule of life, first forged by the desert fathers and mothers of the faith but adapted for sustaining a collective and communal spirituality in today's world. Beauty and Resistance invites you into that rule of life. Through stories, prompts, and spiritual formati...

The Making of a Cultural Landscape

The Making of a Cultural Landscape

For centuries, the English Lake District has been renowned as an important cultural, sacred and literary landscape. It is therefore surprising that there has so far been no in-depth critical examination of the Lake District from a tourism and heritage perspective. Bringing together leading writers from a wide range of disciplines, this book explores the tourism history and heritage of the Lake District and its construction as a cultural landscape from the mid eighteenth century to the present day. It critically analyses the relationships between history, heritage, landscape, culture and policy that underlie the activities of the National Park, Cumbria Tourism and the proposals to recognise the Lake District as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It examines all aspects of the Lake District's history and identity, brings the story up to date and looks at current issues in conservation, policy and tourism marketing. In doing so, it not only provides a unique and valuable analysis of this region, but offers insights into the history of cultural and heritage tourism in Britain and beyond.

Mimesis as Make-Believe

Representations—in visual arts and in fiction—play an important part in our lives and culture. Kendall Walton presents here a theory of the nature of representation, which illuminates its many varieties and goes a long way toward explaining its importance. Drawing analogies to children’s make believe activities, Walton constructs a theory that addresses a broad range of issues: the distinction between fiction and nonfiction, how depiction differs from description, the notion of points of view in the arts, and what it means for one work to be more “realistic” than another. He explores the relation between appreciation and criticism, the character of emotional reactions to literary a...
