This text is the story of rootlessnes, of a London-Irish boy who has two identities and feels at home with neither. John Walsh found the Irishness of his parents' Battersea home stiflingly warm and puzzlingly foreign. Spellbound equally by Mick Jagger and by images of Irish martyrdom, he discovered at the age of 16 an extended family he had never known existed. In the hidden life of Galway was revelation that begged a crucial question: how do we know where our true nature Lies?

The Death of Fr John Walsh at Kilgraney

"On 31 July 1835 the body of a local catholic curate, Fr. John Walsh, was found near Kilgraney bridge near Borris in County Carlow. How had he died? It was likely that he had been thrown from his horse, but in the disturbed political atmosphere of Carlow in the mid-1830s the rumour soon spread that he had been murdered. The finger was pointed at a local protestant farmer, Archibald Sly, who was brought to trial at the Spring Assizes of 1836. The outcome of that trial was a further trial, this time of three witnesses who had testified against Sly. Together, the death of Walsh and the ensuing court cases raise important questions not only about political and social tensions at local level in pre-Famine Ireland, but also about the conflicts between an increasingly centralised and reforming state on the one hand and, on the other, a landed and denominational elite threatened by the pace of change"--Back cover.

Something extraordinary happened to the UK literary scene in the 1980s. In the space of eight years, a generation of young British writers took the literary novel into new realms of setting, subject matter and style, challenging - and almost eclipsing - the Establishment writers of the 1950s. It began with two names - Martin Amis and Ian McEwan - and became a flood: Julian Barnes, William Boyd, Graham Swift, Salman Rushdie, Jeanette Winterson and Pat Barker among them. The rise of the newcomers coincided with astonishing changes in the way books were published - and the ways in which readers bought them and interacted with their authors. Suddenly, authors of serious fiction were like rock st...
