A biography of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, one of the founding directors of the Dutch West India Company and a leading figure in the establishment of the New Netherland colony
The current state of the art of several aspects of minerals and petroleum is presented in this volume. It documents the proceedings of the Internationl symposium on Particle Technology and Surface Phenomena in Minerals and Petroleum sponsored by the Fine Particle Society (FPS). This meeting was held in San Diego, California, August 21-25, 1990. The symposium upon which this volume is based was organized in five sessions emphasizing various basic and applied aspects of research on minerals and petroleum technology. Major topics discussed involve surface phenomena in minerals, mineral flotation, characterization of aspaltenes, theoretical aspects of reservoir simulation, porosity, permeability...
The present volume focuses on the political perceptions of the Hajj, its global religious appeal to Muslims, and the European struggle for influence and supremacy in the Muslim world in the age of pre-colonial and colonial empires. In the late fifteenth century and early sixteenth century, a pivotal change in seafaring occurred, through which western Europeans played important roles in politics, trade, and culture. Viewing this age of empires through the lens of the Hajj puts it into a different perspective, by focusing on how increasing European dominance of the globe in pre-colonial and colonial times was entangled with Muslim religious action, mobility, and agency. The study of Europe’s connections with the Hajj therefore tests the hypothesis that the concept of agency is not limited to isolated parts of the globe. By adopting the “tools of empires,” the Hajj, in itself a global activity, would become part of global and trans-cultural history. Proceedings of the First European and Interface Society meeting held in Como, Italy, September 1987. The book is divided into three main sections: colloids, amphiphile solutions and interfaces. As is typical in this field, most of the 100 contributions (half presented as abstracts) are on the borderline between physics and chemistry (and sometimes biology). Among the topics covered: colloidal dispersions, colloidal semiconductors, fractal aggregates, micelles, microemulsions, lyotropic phases, biological amphiphiles. Based on a Short Course sponsored by Canada's Petroleum Recovery Institute. The first book to focus on the occurrence of emulsions in the petroleum industry. Brings together contributions from a wide range of experts. Provides an up-to-date examination of the nature, occurrence, handling, formation, and breaking of petroleum emulsions. Topics covered include emulsion stability; characterization techniques; rheology of emulsions, and flow properties of emulsions in pipes and porous media, well-head productions, and industrial process streams. Using the fundamental concepts, and based on commercial and pilot-scale experiences, Also shows how to approach making desirable emulsions, transporting and handling them, and how to approach breaking undesirable emulsions.
