Language of Instruction and Cognitive Development

Malawi's recent education statistics show that a high percentage of pupils do not achieve their study goals and subsequently drop out of school. This study examines the underlying reasons, yet the main focus rests on the language of instruction. Learners in three different language areas in Malawi participated in a picture-based test to find out whether the development of problem-oriented logical thinking is influenced by the instruction in the mother tongue in early primary school. Answers are offered with the help of tests and observations during the tests, as well as interviews with teachers, parents, and decision makers. This textbook considers and addresses the design of online learning objects, electronic textbooks, short courses, long courses, MOOC courses, and other types of contents for open sharing. It also considers the design of online mediated communities to enhance such learning. The “openness” may be open-access, and/or it may even be open-source. The learning may range from self-directed and automated to AI robot-led to instructor-led. The main concept of this work is that design learning for open sharing, requires different considerations than when designing for closed and proprietary contexts. Open sharing of learning contents requires a different sense of laws (intellectual property, learn...
