This edited volume explores how primary school teachers create rich opportunities for science learning, higher order thinking and reasoning, and how the teaching of science in Australia, Germany and Taiwan is culturally framed. It draws from the international and cross-cultural science education study EQUALPRIME: Exploring quality primary education in different cultures: A cross-national study of teaching and learning in primary science classrooms. Video cases of Year 4 science teaching were gathered by research teams based at Edith Cowan University, Deakin University, the Freie Universität Berlin, the National Taiwan Normal University and the National Taipei University of Education. Malawi's recent education statistics show that a high percentage of pupils do not achieve their study goals and subsequently drop out of school. This study examines the underlying reasons, yet the main focus rests on the language of instruction. Learners in three different language areas in Malawi participated in a picture-based test to find out whether the development of problem-oriented logical thinking is influenced by the instruction in the mother tongue in early primary school. Answers are offered with the help of tests and observations during the tests, as well as interviews with teachers, parents, and decision makers. This textbook considers and addresses the design of online learning objects, electronic textbooks, short courses, long courses, MOOC courses, and other types of contents for open sharing. It also considers the design of online mediated communities to enhance such learning. The “openness” may be open-access, and/or it may even be open-source. The learning may range from self-directed and automated to AI robot-led to instructor-led. The main concept of this work is that design learning for open sharing, requires different considerations than when designing for closed and proprietary contexts. Open sharing of learning contents requires a different sense of laws (intellectual property, learn...
In this book, the author discusses a modern concept of general education that then helps to clarify both curricular and pedagogical deficits involved in conventional mathematics instruction. It provides an outline of an alternative mathematics instruction that can help to realize a general education and presents detailed arguments for seven interconnected objectives of a school system aiming at general education.
“Scientific Studies on the Work of the ‘Haus der kleinen Forscher’ Foundation” is a regularly published series of scientific reports authored by distinguished experts from the field of early education. This series serves to pursue professional dialogue between the Foundation, academia and practice, with the aim of lending sound support to all child-care centres, after-school care centres and primary schools in Germany in their educational mission. This ninth volume of the series, with a foreword by Ilan Chabay, deals with the goals and requirements of computer science education in the elementary and primary sector. In their expert report, Nadine Bergner, Hilde Köster, Johannes Magen...
The sixteenth volume of the publication series of the "Haus der kleinen Forscher" Foundation, with a foreword by Andreas Hartinger, presents three contributions that were written as part of the PRIMA!2023 project to provide a professional foundation for the Foundation's work in the primary sector. The content focuses on the one hand on the quality of STEM lessons and on the other hand on the question of how teachers should be trained in order to be able to plan and implement good STEM lessons.
The rapid development of video technology in the last decade has changed the ways in which people communicate, how they learn, and how research is done. Video technology offers rich potential in capturing complex social interactions over a prolonged period of time and in supporting teacher professional learning and development. This book explores the ontological, epistemological, methodological, and ethical challenges associated with the different uses of video in research, ranging from video as a tool for investigating social interactions and for stimulating participants’ reflection, to the use of video for engaging varied communities and social groups in the process of teaching, learning...
