Towards an Integrated Approach to Measurement, Analysis and Modeling of Cortical Networks

The amount of data being produced by neuroscientists is increasing rapidly, driven by advances in neuroimaging and recording techniques spanning multiple scales of resolution. The availability of such data poses significant challenges for their processing and interpretation. To gain a deeper understanding of the surrounding issues, the Editors of this e-Book reached out to an interdisciplinary community, and formed the Cortical Networks Working Group, and the genesis of this e-Book thus began with the formation of this Working Group, which was supported by the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis in the USA. The Group consisted of scientists from neuroscience, physics...

Localization and Its Discontents

Localization and Its Discontents

Both psychoanalysis and neurology have left equally prominent marks on the history of the twentieth century, yet they have been interpreted in vastly different ways. The two fields appear to manifest an insurmountable Cartesian dualism, one representing a psychological, the other a somatic approach to understanding personhood and subjectivity. Given this apparent opposition it is remarkable that both trace intellectual and practical roots back to the same "neuropsychiatry" that was dominant in the German-speaking world of the late nineteenth century. Katja Guenther investigates the significance of this historical connection, and in doing so not only reframes the relationship between psychoanalysis and the neurosciences but also provides resources for thinking about how they developed as independent fields. "Localization and Its Discontents "transforms how we think about their theory and practice. By understanding the historical connections and surprising parallels in their past development, we are newly positioned to reassess the assumptions that seem to determine their future.

Recent Advances in Statistical Research and Data Analysis

Recent Advances in Statistical Research and Data Analysis is a collection of papers presented at the symposium of the same name, held in Tokyo by the Center for Information on Statistical Science of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM). Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, the ISM has created visiting professorships and organized symposia to promote collaboration between researchers from Japan and those from other countries. At the symposium on recent advances in statistical research and data analysis, the keynote speaker was Visiting Professor Anthony J. Hayter. This book includes Prof. Hayter's address as well as papers from special lectures that were presented at the symposium. All the contributions are concerned with theory and methodology for real data and thus will benefit researchers, students, and others engaged in data analysis.
