Leer y entender la poesía
Conciencia y compromiso son dos términos clave para el estudio de la literatura en general y de la poesía en particular. Su utilidad crítica lo es especialmente para conocer mejor la llamada poesía social, aunque la insistencia en lo social había llevado a burdas simplicaciones que en nada han contribuido a conocer mejor ese tipo de poesía. En estas Actas, el lector atento podrá encontrar diversas maneras de delimitación conceptual para esos dos términos y podrá encontrar también cómo los estudios críticos no pueden desligar contenido y forma si no quieren ser meros ejercicios sin sentido, como la propia poesía no puede desatender ninguno de esos dos vértices si verdaderamente quiere ser un producto literario. La selección de poemas (Gamoneda, Grande, Martínez Sarrión, Sahagún, Vázquez Montalbán) supone también un corpus textual de urgencia que permite una lectura significativa de la poesía española escrita en los años 50-60.
Survival Songs
How can a song help the hungry and persecuted to survive? Stephanie Sieburth’s Survival Songs explores how a genre of Spanish popular music, the copla, as sung by legendary performer Conchita Piquer, helped Republican sympathizers to survive the Franco regime’s dehumanizing treatment following the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). Piquer’s coplas were sad, bitter stories of fallen women, but they offered a way for the defeated to cope with chronic terror, grief, and trauma in the years known as the “time of silence.” Drawing on the observations of clinical psychotherapy, Sieburth explores the way in which listening to Piquer’s coplas enabled persecuted, ostracized citizens to subconsciously use music, role-play, ritual, and narrative to mourn safely and without fear of repercussion from the repressive state. An interdisciplinary study that includes close readings of six of Piquer’s most famous coplas, Survival Songs will be of interest to specialists in modern Spanish studies and to clinical psychologists, musicologists, and those with an interest in issues of trauma, memory, and human rights.
Metaphor in Use
Metaphor is a fascinating phenomenon, but it is also complex and multi-faceted, varying in how it is manifested in different modes of expression, languages, cultures, or time-scales. How then can we reliably identify metaphors in different contexts? How does the language or culture of speakers and hearers affect the way metaphors are produced or interpreted? Are the methods employed to explore metaphors in one context applicable in others? The sixteen chapters that make up this volume offer not only detailed studies of the situated use of metaphor in language, gesture, and visuals around the world providing important insights into the different factors that produce variation but also careful explication and discussion of the methodological issues that arise when researchers approach metaphor in diverse 'real world' contexts. The book constitutes an important contribution to applied metaphor studies, and will prove an invaluable resource for the novice and experienced metaphor researcher alike.
