Computers are a fundamentally important tool in sport science research, sports performance analysis and, increasingly, in coaching and education programmes in sport. This book defines the field of ‘sport informatics’, explaining how computer science can be used to solve sport-related problems, in both research and applied aspects. Beginning with a clear explanation of the functional principles of hardware and software, the book examines the key functional areas in which computer science is employed in sport, including: knowledge discovery and database development data acquisition, including devices for measuring performance data motion tracking and analysis systems modelling and simulation match analysis systems e-learning and multimedia in sports education Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this book is important reading for any student, researcher or practitioner working in sport science, sport performance analysis, research methods in sport, applied computer science or informatics.

Injuries, Injury Prevention and Training in Climbing

Climbing as an activity has a long and proud history of ascending mountains and steep walls. Still, as a newly acknowledged Olympic sport, climbing has a short history of systematic training and injury prevention. Sport climbing is divided in three disciplines (bouldering, lead climbing, speed climbing) that requires different physiological and psychological abilities witch again lead to different mechanical loading and thereby possible injuries. Furthermore, climbing is practiced by a diversified population from the recreational climber to the professional athlete. One of the things that separates climbing from most other Olympic sports is that a vast majority of the athletes operates outside the federations. Even internationally high performing climbers are not organized or part of a team with trainers and health personnel.

At the Edge of AI

How are human computation systems developed in the field of citizen science to achieve what neither humans nor computers can do alone? Through multiple perspectives and methods, Libuse Hannah Veprek examines the imagination of these assemblages, their creation, and everyday negotiation in the interplay of various actors and play/science entanglements at the edge of AI. Focusing on their human-technology relations, this ethnographic study shows how these formations are marked by intraversions, as they change with technological advancements and the actors' goals, motivations, and practices. This work contributes to the constructive and critical ethnographic engagement with human-AI assemblages in the making.
