Amb la claredat de judici que el caracteritza i des de la perspectiva privilegiada d'experimentat historiador, en aquestes Memòries. De l'esperança a la desfeta (1920-1939) Josep Benet fa un repàs dels anys d'infantesa i aprenentatge: des de la seva Cervera natal fins a l'entrada a l'escolania de Montserrat i el pas per l'acadèmia Ramon Llull de Barcelona. Són els anys, de 1920 a 1936, de formació d'un dels més reconeguts intel·lectuals catalans contemporanis i de gran esperances personals i col·lectives. Esperances, però, que aviat es veuen truncades per l'esclat traumàtic de la Guerra Civil en la qual Benet es veu directament implicat: al dolor per l'assassinat d'alguns dels seus mestres seguirà la crida cap al front amb la lleva del «biberó» fins que arribi la derrota.

"El 14 d'abril de 1920 vaig néixer a Cervera ... Em batejaren el 27 d'abril següent, festa de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat, patrona de Catalunya. In this reference, Buffery and Marcer cover all of the areas historically inhabited by the Catalan people.
