Malgrat la inestabilitat política espanyola i el recurs permanent a les suspensions de garanties i la censura, la força de la premsa com a fenomen social i econòmic produeix un creixement exponencial de la publicació de periòdics, amb un pluralisme ascendent, l’expansió de l’ús de la llengua catalana i la formació d’una cultura professional. En una seixantena d’anys es produeix un salt molt fort, ja que de quatre diaris a Barcelona i vuit a altres ciutats es passa a dos-cents nou i cent vuitanta-vuit, respectivament, i d’un tiratge conjunt estimat de 70.000 a 872.000 exemplars.
