Coastal aquifers serve as major sources for freshwater supply in many countries around the world, especially in arid and semi-arid zones. Many coastal areas are also heavily urbanized, a fact that makes the need for freshwater even more acute. Coastal aquifers are highly sensitive to disturbances. Inappropriate management of a coastal aquifer may lead to its destruction as a source for freshwater much earlier than other aquifers which are not connected to the sea. The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life II
The meeting of Aquatic Noise 2013 will introduce participants to the most recent research data, regulatory issues and thinking about effects of man-made noise and will foster critical cross-disciplinary discussion between the participants. Emphasis will be on the cross-fertilization of ideas and findings across species and noise sources. As with its predecessor, The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life: 3rd International Conference will encourage discussion of the impact of underwater sound, its regulation and mitigation of its effects. With over 100 contributions from leading researchers, a wide range of sources of underwater sound will be considered.

Com cada any des del 2012, l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans celebra la Diada Nacional de Catalunya amb un acte institucional en què un membre de l’IEC o d’una societat filial imparteix el discurs commemoratiu de la Diada. La conferència d’enguany és a càrrec de M. Teresa Estrach i Panella, metgessa, doctora en dermatologia i catedràtica d’aquesta mateixa disciplina, membre emèrita de la Secció de Ciències Biològiques. El seu discurs, titulat «Els metges i la medicina al nostre país: passat, present i futur», fa reflexionar sobre la precària situació en què han hagut de treballar els professionals de la medicina del nostre país durant l’última i recent gran crisi sanitària, i empeny a considerar la necessitat que tenim com a societat de progressar.
