Agent Alone

Agent Alone

"Doing what had to be done" was a motto that Joseph Barone personally followed. In Vietnam, he was the CID Agent assigned to the 11th Light Infantry Brigade (LIB) under the Americal 23rd Division from July 1968 - July 1969. He normally worked alone in the field and supported his own and two other brigades. One night, a troubled helicopter pilot related the story of the needless killing of unarmed civilians by the brigade's commanding officer. This initiated the advisement of CID authorities and upper headquarters, but the case was soon covered up, though the details resurfaced and led to the first murder trial of a general officer since the turn of the century. After Vietnam, Warrant Officer Barone lost much of his interest in the military and eventually retired, but later became involved in the international import/export business in Cuba, Panama, and South America. He was unfairly targeted by the Department of Justice and the FBI for nearly seven years, partly because of his long and close friendship with a Mafia capo and being falsely accused of being a high-tech spy, but he still thrived and lived an unusual, long life according to his own principles.

"Gina" is a story about a kidnapping. A twelve-year old girl, committed to an orphanage along with her six siblings due to her mother's inability to care for them, disappears in the middle of the night. Though the crime takes place in Newark, New Jersey, the victim and the perpetrators are from villages in southern Italy, and much of the book is set in these villages and other parts of that country. As the motivation for the kidnapping emerges, it is seen to be connected to the extreme poverty of the region and the brutal character of the victim's father, a World War One Italian army veteran named Pasquale Farinelli. Pasquale's story, along with the stories of a number of others involved in one way or another, is interwoven with the story of the kidnapping itself, which ends in an unexpected way.

The Body in the Record Room

It's 1954. When a mental patient who calls himself Roy Rogers finds a body in the hospital record room, his investigation leads him to the murder of Marcia Weinhart. Twenty years earlier, authorities found her mutilated corpse lying on the altar of St. Adrian's Catholic Church in Sunrise, Missouri. Roy, his friend Harry, and Harry's beloved dog, Bullet, move through the buildings and grounds of the Sunrise Mental Hospital, a thousand-acre facility with more than two thousand patients and eight hundred employees. They go from the record room to the hospital's Catholic chapel, from the blacksmith shop to the hospital cemetery, looking for victims of the terrible abuse behind the Weinhart murder. In the process, Roy comes to better understand the strength and moral stature of his hero, the real Roy Rogers. He is able to overcome the terror of his past, choosing to forgo violence and work within the law. Joe Barone's debut makes for an intriguing mystery while also elevating old-time heroes and their values.
