This introduction to modality places the emphasis on the metaphysics of modality rather than on the formal semetics of quantified modal logic. The text begins by introducing students to the "de re/de dicto" distinction, conventionalist and conceptualist theories of modality and some of the key problems in modality, particularly Quine's criticisms. It then moves on to explain how possible worlds provide a solution to many of the problems in modality and how possible worlds themselves have been used to analyse notions outside modality such as properties and propositions. Possible worlds introduce problems of their own and the book argues that to make progress with these problems a theory of possible worlds is required. The pros and cons of various theories of possible worlds are then examined in turn, including those of Lewis, Kripke, Adams, Stalnaker and Plantinga.

Murder, Madness and Mayhem
We have an idealised view of life in Victorian times, seeing it as idyllic and we mistakenly believe that present day society is more violent. This, in fact, is not true but, because of TV coverage we are aware of terrible events in this country and others. When you look back you see that crimes were more violent and "gory", the macabre interest of neighbours who paid to see the victims is incredible. The punishments meted out in courts were similar to that today, namely, more severe for crimes against possessions than for those against people. One crime I followed as far as possible and, with the help of the Black Museum of Manchester, was able to show was that Sarah Manion was on the roles of the prison. What happened to her there and what became of her on release, I could not trace. The "Good old days", they were certainly not.

Metaphysics of States of Affairs
This book addresses the metaphysics of Armstrongian states of affairs, i.e. instantiations of naturalist universals by particulars. The author argues that states of affairs are the best candidate for truthmakers and, in the spirit of logical atomism, that we need no molecular truthmakers for positive truths. In the book's context, this has the pleasing result that there are no molecular states of affairs. Following this account of truthmaking, the author first shows that the particulars in (first-order) states of affairs are bare particulars. He then argues that the properties in states of affairs are simple, non-relational and concrete universals. Next, he argues that (material) relations in states of affairs are external relations. Lastly, he argues that a state of affairs is unified by a distinctive formal relation without giving rise to Bradley’s regress. Written in a relatively non-technical style, the book offers a valuable resource for philosophers working on analytic metaphysics and ontology, as well as their graduate students.
