The Life and Times of Guillaume Dupuytren, 1777-1835

"At the time of Dupuytren's birth in 1777, France was still governed by an absolute monarch, Louis XVI. When Dupuytren died in 1835, he had lived through two revolutions (1789 and 1830), a republic, a 'Directoire', a consulate, an empire under Napoleon and another two royal restorations under Louis XVIII and Charles X. Dupuytren was always closely involved in these historic events because he was in direct contact with the leading figures from the different periods, both privately and professionally. He played an important role in the organisation and reorganisation of medical surgical education. As the head surgeon of the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, the largest hospital in France, he treated not only a large and highly varied number of surgical patients, but also the victims of riots, insurrections, revolutions and wars, as well as victims of the cholera epidemic of 1832.

Imperfect Oracle

Science and its offshoot, technology, enter into the very fabric of our society in so many ways that we cannot imagine life without them. We are surrounded by crises and debates over climate change, stem-cell research, AIDS, evolutionary theory and “intelligent design,” the use of DNA in solving crimes, and many other issues. Society is virtually forced to follow our natural tendency, which is to give great weight to the opinions of scientific experts. How is it that these experts have come to acquire such authority, and just how far does their authority reach? Does specialized knowledge entitle scientists to moral authority as well? How does scientific authority actually function in our...

A history of surgery

Surgery as a medical discipline has from its beginnings appealed to the imagination of many. It is therefore not surprising to find that its colourful past has induced quite a few authors to take up their pens. The truth of this in the Netherlands is witnessed by a number of dissertations and monographs and especially by the numerous articles related to the history of surgery which have appeared in the medical weekly Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde, particularly during the two decades preceding the Second World War. The memorial volume, published in 1977 by the 'Nederlandse Vereniging voor Heelkunde' (Association of Surgeons of the Netherlands) has thoroughly covered the history of D...
