At last a comprehensive visual and chronological survey of the work of Arthur B. Davies is available through this text-fiche publication. More than one hundred institutions and private collectors have participated in bringing together the 556 illustrations presented here, many of which are being made public for the first time. In an insightful introduction, Czestochowski explores Davies's long career and discusses his significant contribution to American art. He also provides an informative chronology and useful exhibition records in addition to the detailed catalog entries. The media presented here include paintings, drawings, sculptures, textiles, and experimental works.

"Documenting one of only four complete, "vintage" sets of the bronzes, this lavishly illustrated catalogue presents for the first time stunning color images of the sculptures together with the archival photographs taken by Gautier of the original models found in Degas's studio in 1917-1918, and the historic photographs taken fifty years ago by the well-known Swiss art photographer Leonard von Matt." "The essays offer the general reader an exploration of Degas and his sculpture. Included are an interview with Degas himself, introductions to mid-century exhibitions, and reflections of contemporary thinking on the artist, his motivations, and the complex casting history of these works. The appendixes cover the results of extensive recent research into newly available archives, some previously published only in French."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Arthur Bowen Davies (1862-1928) was hailed by his contemporaries as one of the greatest American artists, but his work fell out of favor soon after his death, and it is only recently that the public has begun to reevaluate Davies's contribution to American art. Georgia O'Keeffe Visions of the Sublime

Georgia O'Keeffe Visions of the Sublime

  • Categories: Art

Even in her earliest works, Georgia O'Keeffe was a visionary who intuitively created her own definitions of the sublime, enhanced the perception of its visual symbols, and provided new ways to view the surrounding environment and explore one's inner self. Over the past two centuries, the concept of the sublime has been substantially redefined by a small number of artists, writers, and critics. For O'Keeffe, already imbued with the spiritual and transcendental, the sublime was not a theoretical concept; it was manifest in her everyday worldly experiences. Although most of O'Keeffe's works are landscapes, the sublime, for her, was not necessarily associated with a physical location. As only few others have, O'Keeffe demonstrated an intuitive association with all that can be considered sublime, and in her remarkable journey with color, line, light, and form, from the abstract to the representational, she pursued a spiritual quest that has dramatically refined the visual qualities of the sublime.
