Joseph Stella's Symbolism
Born in 1877 in a small village in southern Italy, Stella came to New York at the age of eighteen, bringing the influences of the ancient classical tradition from a world deep-rooted in Christian imagery to a dramatic modern city transformed by industrial development. Irma Jaffe explores how Stella skillfully integrated these influences with a variety of contemporary ideas and invested his work with a personal significance that was both sensual and spiritual.
