The Book of Joshua

The Book of Joshua contains the papers of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense 2010 on the Book of Joshua and the Land of Israel. Not for the sake of plurality as such, but as a signal of the state of the art in Joshua research in the post-Noth era this volume functions as a platform for different approaches in exegetical and historical studies. Text-critical, redaction-critical and compositional studies, as well as final text reading are offered. The papers are grouped together in six thematic clusters: Text, Versions and Terminology; Tradition, Composition and Context; History, Archaeology and Geography; Crossing the Jordan; Jericho and Violence; History of Reception. Starting with the question which text we read (MT, LXX, 4QJosha) the book engages not only in the recent Pentateuch-Hexateuch debate, but also in the problematic fields of (divine) violence and the land. Therefore an important section deals with the history of reception, starting with the Book of Maccabees, Philo, Josephus, the New Testament and ending up with two examples of reception in recent times.

At the Edge of the Nation

Debates over the remote and beguiling Southern Kuril Islands have revealed a kaleidoscope of divergent and contradictory ideas, convictions, and beliefs on what constitutes the “national” identity of post-Soviet Russia. Forming part of an archipelago stretching from Kamchatka to Hokkaido, administered by Russia but claimed by Japan, these disputed islands offer new perspectives on the ways in which territorial visions of the nation are refracted, inverted, and remade in a myriad of different ways. At the Edge of the Nation provides a unique account of how the Southern Kurils have shaped the parameters of the Russian state and framed debates on the politics of identity in the post-Soviet ...

Evolutionary Pathways and Enigmatic Algae

For the first time a book is available devoted to cellular evolution and to the biology of Cyanidium and other enigmatic cells. Twenty international experts present their views and reviews, postulating new theories on compartmental (direct filiation) eukaryogenesis, discussing the endosymbiotic hypothesis, and providing conceptions on molecular RNA and protein sequences of genes for phylogenetic applications. The book contains exclusive reports on additional species (newly discovered) of the Cyanidium group. Special attention is given to the red algae and other enigmatic/unicellular algae including Nanochlorum eucaryotum (a green alga with minimal eukaryotic characteristics). The mystifying taxon of Glaucocystophyta (containing Cyanophora paradoxa -- the endosymbiotic `guinea pig' with cyanelles/host special relationships) is examined. For biologists, post/graduate students in biology, and anyone seriously interested in algae, evolution, cytology, biochemistry and questions of nucleated cell differentiation or cellular endosymbiosis.
