El presente libro tiene como objeto el análisis de los cuentos de José Martínez Ruiz. Se inicia el mismo con un estudio de la poética de la narración breve del propio autor. Siguiendo su concepción del cuento literario - tan susceptible de cambios con el correr de los años- y de la que nos dieron prestigiosos azorinistas, hemos llegado a delimitar un corpus que supera los seiscientos relatos. El análisis de los mismos, a través de las distintas- y aun distantes- etapas de la obra de Azorín, nos muestra a un escritor que conocía muy bien la tradición cuentística, tanto española, como extranjera. Pero, sobre todo, nos descubre a un artista que, adelantándose a su tiempo, fue capaz de trazar nuevos y arriesgados caminos por los que hoy deambula el cuento contemporáneo.

Written symbols, religious objects, oral traditions, and body language have long been integrated into the Kongo system of graphic writing of the Bakongo people in Central Africa as well as their Cuban descendants. This book provides a significant overview of the social, religious, and historical contexts in which the Kongo kingdom developed and spread to the Caribbean.
Current narratological theories, including those of Todorov, Genette, Bakhtin, and Martinez Bonati, assist in teasing out the intertextual maneuvers and philosophical conflicts embedded in the novels of the period, while the sociological and biographical material bridges the philosophical and literary analyses.
The development of basic textual strategies in Spanish fiction from 1902 to 1926 is the focus of this study. Challenging traditional views of the relationships between the literature produced by the Generation of 1898 and the Spanish vanguard movement, Spires traces through analyses of select works a process of evolution beginning at the turn of the century and continuing into the 1920s. Spires demonstrates how the somewhat tentative strategies of the first decade became more daring in the second. As opposed to the extant historical, autobiographical, and thematic surveys of this period, Transparent Simulacra features structuralist and post-structuralist readings of fiction by Baroja, Azorín, Unamuno, Pérez de Ayala, Gómez de Serna, Jarnés, and Salinas. These approaches offer not only revisionist views of a literary period but also revisionist readings of some of Spain's best-known fiction.
