The Power of Cities
The Power of Cities focuses on Iberian cities during the lengthy transition from the late Roman to the early modern period, with a particular interest in the change from early Christianity to the Islamic period, and on to the restoration of Christianity. Drawing on case studies from cities such as Toledo, Cordoba, and Seville, it collects for the first time recent research in urban studies using both archaeological and historical sources. Against the common portrayal of these cities characterized by discontinuities due to decadence, decline and invasions, it is instead continuity – that is, a gradual transformation – which emerges as the defining characteristic. The volume argues for a fresh interpretation of Iberian cities across this period, seen as a continuum of structural changes across time, and proposes a new history of the Iberian Peninsula, written from the perspective of the cities. Contributors are Javier Arce, María Asenjo González, Antonio Irigoyen López, Alberto León Muñoz, Matthias Maser, Sabine Panzram, Gisela Ripoll, Torsten dos Santos Arnold, Isabel Toral-Niehoff, Fernando Valdés Fernández, and Klaus Weber.

También han aparecido restos romanos de menor interés, pero, entre todos los hallazgos, destaca la localización del muro norte de la gran Mezquita Alhama de Toledo, asociada a aljibes con grafitos que permiten atribuir estas obras al reinado de Al-Mamún, lo que supone la primera información segura sobre ese singular monumento, uno de los más importantes de Al-Andalus. La obra finaliza con diversos apéndices, entre los que hay que resaltar el estudio crítico de la importante inscripción de Recaredo referente a la consagración de la Catedral Católica, conservada actualmente en el Claustro. The Visual Culture of al-Andalus in the Christian Kingdoms of Iberia
This book addresses the reception of Islamic visual culture by the northern Iberian kingdoms, by systematically comparing works of art from both sides and fleshing out their historical context. This study includes figurative and iconographic motifs, architectural forms, and even the spolia from constructions and Arabic inscriptions that were embedded in Christian buildings. The Islamic visual culture of al-Andalus was often transformed as it was recreated by Christian hands, bringing to the fore various nuances in the relationship between the two religious communities. Artistic transfer was conditioned by social coexistence between Christians and Muslims—both in the caliphate al-Andalus and in the northern realms—and military conflict. To approach the different ways in which Andalusi visual culture was received in the northern kingdoms, while embracing the vast diversity of case studies available, this book is divided into three thematic sections: Reinterpretation, Appropriation, and Artistic Transfers. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, and medieval studies.
La «señal» del pedrero
La catedral de Toledo vivió un periodo de gran actividad con la elevación del claustro y las edificaciones que lo rodeaban. Esta investigación propone una nueva lectura sobre su historia constructiva y la organización de los talleres de pedreros que trabajaron en la gran cantería castellana. ¿Quiénes eran estos maestros y de dónde venían? ¿Cómo se formaban? ¿Con qué materiales y medios trabajaban? ¿Cuándo y en qué condiciones lo hacían? ¿Qué «señales» dejaron en las piedras del claustro? Para responder a estas preguntas se ha contrastado lo edificado con la documentación conservada y se ha incluido, en el análisis de los paramentos, el estudio de los signos lapidarios. La aplicación de un Sistema de Información Geográfica para las «señales» identificadas ha permitido transcender la historia de lo construido.

This two-volume set LNCS 6691 and 6692 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, IWANN 2011, held in Torremolinos-Málaga, Spain, in June 2011. The 154 revised papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 202 submissions for presentation in two volumes. The first volume includes 69 papers organized in topical sections on mathematical and theoretical methods in computational intelligence; learning and adaptation; bio-inspired systems and neuro-engineering; hybrid intelligent systems; applications of computational intelligence; new applications of brain-computer interfaces; optimization algorithms in graphic processing units; computing languages with bio-inspired devices and multi-agent systems; computational intelligence in multimedia processing; and biologically plausible spiking neural processing.

En las regiones a las dos orillas del Gaditanum fretum existía una concentración de ciudades única en el Imperio. La importancia y el significado de estas ciudades como centros de poder se mantienen -según el debate actual- sin interrupción hasta comienzos del siglo VIII, pero, ¿cómo se desarrolla a partir de entonces, después de estos años que hasta ahora siempre se habían considerado como punto de inflexión decisivo en la historia de estas regiones? Ya en 1985, Hugh N. Kennedy llamó la atención sobre el hecho de que la llamada «Madīna» debería considerarse consecuencia de transformaciones sociales y económicas, más que resultado de una «islamización» abrupta de la sociedad. Este volumen, en función de la nueva valoración del mundo de las ciudades de la Antigüedad tardía, quiere cuestionar sus consecuencias para la época de la temprana Edad Media, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar y sobre una nueva base material.
Robot 2019: Fourth Iberian Robotics Conference
This book gathers a selection of papers presented at ROBOT 2019 – the Fourth Iberian Robotics Conference, held in Porto, Portugal, on November 20th–22nd, 2019. ROBOT 2019 is part of a series of conferences jointly organized by the SPR – Sociedade Portuguesa de Robótica (Portuguese Society for Robotics) and SEIDROB – Sociedad Española para la Investigación y Desarrollo en Robótica (Spanish Society for Research and Development in Robotics). ROBOT 2019 built upon several previous successful events, including three biannual workshops and the three previous installments of the Iberian Robotics Conference, and chiefly focused on presenting the latest findings and applications in robotics from the Iberian Peninsula, although the event was also open to research and researchers from other countries. The event featured five plenary talks on state-of-the-art topics and 16 special sessions, plus a main/general robotics track. In total, after a stringent review process, 112 high-quality papers written by authors from 24 countries were selected for publication.
ROBOT 2017: Third Iberian Robotics Conference
These volumes of "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing" highlight papers presented at the "Third Iberian Robotics Conference (ROBOT 2017)". Held from 22 to 24 November 2017 in Seville, Spain, the conference is a part of a series of conferences co-organized by SEIDROB (Spanish Society for Research and Development in Robotics) and SPR (Portuguese Society for Robotics). The conference is focused on Robotics scientific and technological activities in the Iberian Peninsula, although open to research and delegates from other countries. Thus, it has more than 500 authors from 21 countries. The volumes present scientific advances but also robotic industrial applications, looking to promote new collaborations between industry and academia.
