For People Like Us

Is God really for us? It has been said that no person ever rises above their view of God. Whom we worship, what we worship, is irrevocably tied to who we become. Worship predicts identity. Without a new vision of God there can be no new vision of hope. In the middle of Luke's Gospel, in chapter 15, are three of Jesus's most treasured parables. They are the "holy, holy, holy" of Luke's Gospel. The parable of the lost sheep, the parable of the lost coin, and the parable of the lost son(s)" are more than earthly stories with heavenly meanings. They are images of theological revolution. For People Like Us is not merely a commentary on these parables; it is a study that captures a fresh vision of what God is like. This vision not only influences our reading of Luke 15, but our reading of this text, in turn, influences our theology. Once we appreciate this, we find that God, the creator of innumerable stars, is not merely for us. It is his honor to be so.

Blake’s ‘Human Form Divine’ has long commanded the spotlight. Beastly Blake shifts focus to the non-human creatures who populate Blake’s poetry and designs. The author of ‘The Tyger’ and ‘The Lamb’ was equally struck by the ‘beastliness’ and the beauty of the animal kingdom, the utter otherness of animal subjectivity and the meaningful relationships between humans and other creatures. ‘Conversing with the Animal forms of wisdom night & day’, Blake fathomed how much they have to teach us about creation and eternity. This collection ranges from real animals in Blake’s surroundings, to symbolic creatures in his mythology, to animal presences in his illustrations of Virgil, Dante, Hayley, and Stedman. It makes a third to follow Queer Blake and Sexy Blake in irreverently illuminating blind spots in Blake criticism. Beastly Blake will reward lovers of Blake’s writing and visual art, as well as those interested in Romanticism and animal studies.

Stagg's University

For this first case study of college football by a social historian, Lester has brought life to the story of a university football program that had an unusual beginning, a glorious middle, and a unique and inglorious conclusion. The nation's first tenured coach and the most creative and entrepreneurial of all college coaches from the 1890s to the 1920s, Amos Alonzo Stagg headed a program marked by creation of the lettermans club and by the dominant use of the forward pass, of jersey numbers, and of the collegiate modern T formation. Stagg, who had been an all-American football player at Yale University, joined the company of nine former college or seminary presidents and academic notables in...
