In this volume distinguished historian Kenneth Maxwell collects some of his most significant writings, following Portugal's imperial journey from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean and from the coast of Asia to the mouth of the Red Sea. Maxwell takes the reader on a lively journey from Macao to the Amazon forests-each piece in the collection is a reflection of the authors driving passions. Major themes he examines are: the peopling of the Americas, the shaking up of continents, the spirit that took a precocious Portugal into its imperial venture, the play between Portugal's' extensive imperial reach into Africa and Asia and the Americas, and the rise of Brazil and its tumultuous history.

Plunging into Turmoil in the Aftermath of Crisis

The 2008 economic and financial crisis marked the beginning of a period of social transformation and uncertainty that continues to characterise present and future social development in unplanned and unexpected ways, with frequently harmful effects. It has highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of crises phenomena and how these affect the overall course of human development. On the one hand, the social sciences constitute a means for acquiring a better understanding of the character of the rapid and complex social transformations associated with crises. On the other hand, they can orientate people and social practices on how a greater degree of collective and democratic control can b...

The rapid urbanization of the Asian continent and transformation of its cityscapes have incited many professionals and scholars to pay urgent attention to the study of Asian streets and public spaces in the hope of recording them, learning from their complex nature, and even applying distilled principles in new environments before they disappear under the assault of rapid urban transformation. This volume presents articles focusing on four prevalent themes, namely transformation and modernity, the culture of streets, experiencing the street and finally, design and quality of streets. However, these themes inevitably overlap, pointing out again the complexity of what we call the "street" and ...

On December 20, 1999, Portugal was formally handed over Macau to China, ending 442 years of Portuguese control of the tiny peninsula and two small islands. Though comprised of just over nine square miles (with new reclamation), Macau was once one of the world's most important trading ports. In recent years, Macau has become a vital alternative to Hong Kong as a gateway to the booming economy of the People's Republic of China. Macau is first examined from a historical perspective. The island's responses to World War ll, the Korean War and China's civil war are fully covered, as is the influence of China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. The secret agreements between China and Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s are described, along with a full accounting of the arrangement for the return of Macau to China. The prospects for the island's future under Chinese control are then detailed.
