Com imensa alegria e entusiasmo, compartilho com todos vocês, leitores e apreciadores de poesias, este pequeno livro que intitulei "Poesias do João Paulo de Mendonça". Porém devo imaginar que vocês ficarão surpresos por saber que não sou um escritor, no sentido estrito do termo, mas um engenheiro, formado pela Faculdade de Engenharia Elétrica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. No entanto, desde muito cedo, descobri a minha paixão pela literatura. Em particular, os textos poéticos entraram na minha vida de forma muito profunda, através dos versos de Antero de Quental, de modo que me vi, ainda na primeira juventude, aos 12 anos de idade, a escrever as primeiras poesias. Hoje, aos 87 anos de idade, vejo concretizar o sonho que me acompanhou ao longo da vida: o de poder tornar públicas as minhas poesias, as quais expressam, cada uma delas, as emoções experimentadas na vivência dos acontecimentos da época em que foram escritas.

This is the first complete economic and social history of Brazil in the modern period in any language. It provides a detailed analysis of the evolution of the Brazilian society and economy from the end of the empire in 1889 to the present day. The authors elucidate the basic trends that have defined modern Brazilian society and economy. In this period Brazil moved from being a mostly rural traditional agriculture society with only light industry and low levels of human capital to a modern literate and industrial nation. It has also transformed itself into one of the world's most important agricultural exporters. How and why this occurred is explained in this important survey.

Now in its third edition, this is a bigger (more than 11,000 entries), updated version of the 1989 original covering the enormous kaleidoscope of changing political boundaries, names, and rulers of Africa. This exhaustive reference allows the user quickly to determine what happened in or to each country and when--changes of names, political systems, rulers, and so on. The term "state" is loosely defined to embrace, throughout the history of Africa, any area of land with recognized borders and evidence of a continuing governmental structure, almost always with a capital city. Entries give official name of country, dates during which it went by that name, location, capital, alternate names including cross-references to previous and later incarnations, and a list of rulers with dates of power when known. This study analyzes the establishment of an iron foundry in the interior 18th-century of Angola. It was a fruit of the Portuguese Enlightenment, which encouraged investment in manufacturing, particularly of iron, a metal indispensable for military and technological purposes. However, the plans faced the resistance of African blacksmiths and founders who refused to learn foreign techniques and work processes.
