The Satiric Worlds of William Boyd
This study explores five major narratives of Ghanian-born novelist William Boyd from a satiric point of view. Boyd's novels and short stories take up some of the particular traits of satire, a genre which has gradually lost the impact it had in the eighteenth century. This book analyses the satiric spirit of four novels and one short story: A Good Man in Africa, An Ice-Cream War, Stars and Bars, Armadillo and The Destiny of Nathalie 'X'. It looks at the way Boyd approaches crucial events in twentieth-century history and how he unmasks the follies that underlay most of them. It also deals with issues such as the effects of British colonialism in Africa, the superficiality of Hollywood's film industry and the shortcomings of modern urban civilisation. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the analysis of recent satire criticism.

Yesterday's Tomorrows
2012 was a year of financial crises and ecological disasters, of endings and forebodings. The world did not end on December 21st as the Mayan calendar predicted, but became the stage for new beginnings, utopian communities, protest groups and solidarity movements. The essays in this book form an intertextual space for negotiating meaningful facts and fictions with an aim to understanding the present. Discussions focus on utopia and dystopia from literature and film, not only within the framework of science fiction but also critical theory, gender politics and social sciences. The authors of these essays are international academics whose interest lies in utopian studies and who attended the 13th International Conference of Utopian Studies, “The Shape of Things to Come”, held in Tarragona, Spain, in 2012.

Glocalization
This book seeks to provide a critical introduction to the under-theorized concept of Glocalization. While the term has been slowly diffused into social-scientific vocabulary, to date, there is no book in circulation that specifically discusses this concept. Historically theorists have intertwined the concepts of the ‘global’ and the ‘glocal’ or have subsumed the ‘glocal’ under other concepts – such as cosmopolitanization. Refracting the Canon in Contemporary British Literature and Film
Contemporary works of art that remodel the canon not only create complex, hybrid and plural products but also alter our perceptions and understanding of their source texts. This is the dual process, referred to in this volume as “refraction”, that the essays collected here set out to discuss and analyse by focusing on the dialectic rapport between postmodernism and the canon. What is sought in many of the essays is a redefinition of postmodernist art and a re-examination of the canon in the light of contemporary epistemology. Given this dual process, this volume will be of value both to everyone interested in contemporary art—particularly fiction, drama and film—and also to readers whose aim it is to promote a better appreciation of canonical British literature.
Northern Irish Poetry and the Russian Turn
Seamus Heaney, Tom Paulin and Medbh McGuckian are the three most influential poets from Northern Ireland who have composed poems with a link to the Tsarist Empire and the Soviet Union.
