The Granny and the Heist / La estanquera de Vallecas

Premiered in 1981, The Granny and the Heist (La estanquera de Vallecas) interweaves tense excitement, comic banter and moments of great tenderness in its examination of an area of Madrid equally ignored by Spain’s nascent democracy as it had been under the Franco dictatorship. Contains a new critical introduction and language-teaching resources.

The Creative Process of Els Joglars and Teatro de La Abadía

The rehearsal processes of theatre companies are an oft-neglected area of research in Drama and Performance Studies. This work on the Catalan devising collective Els Joglars and the Madrid producing venue Teatro de la Abad a seeks to redress the balance with a close analysis of methodologies employed in rehearsal. In effect, both companies have created distinctive rehearsal processes by applying ideas and techniques from a wider European context to a Spanish theatre scene which had been seen to follow rather than develop trends and techniques visible in theatre across France, Italy and Germany. Critically, their hybrid rehearsal processes generate heightened theatrical results for the audience. Thus the book shifts the focus of academic study away from product and towards process, demonstrating how an understanding of process assists in the reading of the theatrical product. Simon David Breden obtained a PhD in Drama & Hispanic Studies from Queen Mary, University of London. He has worked as a professional director and expert in Spanish theatre in London and Madrid.

The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Sexuality

The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Sexuality questions what it would mean to think of sexualities transnationally and explores the way cultural ideas about sex and sexuality are translated across languages. It considers how scholars chart the multilingual rise of the modern sexual sciences in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, how translators, writers, and readers respond to sexual modernities and to what extent the keywords of queer social movements travel across borders. The handbook draws from fields as diverse as translation studies, critical multilingualism studies, comparative literature, European studies, Slavic studies, Middle Eastern studies, Latin American studies, and ...

Shakespeare and Tyranny

This book brings together a selection of essays on the reception and dissemination of Shakespeare’s plays in England and beyond from the 17th century to the present. Written from the perspective of a nation or cluster of nations in which Shakespeare has been used either to reflect, legitimize or challenge different versions of authoritarian rule, each of the chapters offers a picture of Shakespeare as unwitting commentator on some of the most significant and unsettling political events in Europe and elsewhere. Illustrating and analyzing changing attitudes to Shakespeare and his work in various tyrannical and post-tyrannical contexts in both Western and Eastern Europe, North Africa and Sout...

The Palgrave Handbook of Music in Comedy Cinema

This handbook tackles the understudied relationship between music and comedy cinema by analysing the nature, perception, and function of music from fresh perspectives. Its approach is not only multidisciplinary, but also interdisciplinary in its close examination of how music and other cinematic devices interact in the creation of comedy. The volume addresses gender representation, national identities, stylistic strategies, and employs inputs from cultural studies, musicology, music theory, psychology, cognitivism, semiotics, formal and stylistic film analysis, and psychoanalysis. It is organised in four sections: general introductions, theoretical investigations, music and comedy within national cinemas, and exemplary case studies of films or authors.

'Other' Spanish Theatres

'Other' Spanish Theatres challenges established opinions on modern Iberian theatre through a consideration of the roles of contrasting figures and companies who have impacted upon both the practice and the perception of Spanish and European stages. In this broad and detailed study, Delgado selects six subjects which map out alternative readings of a nation's theatrical innovation through the last century. These six subjects include Margarita Xirgu, Enrique Rambal, María Casarest and Nuria Espert.
