Two calligraphic writing sheets, one copied by Juan Sánchez and the other by Manuel Sánchez, who were both probably older juveniles at the time. The texts relate to the school subjects of history and church doctrine. Each includes a hand-painted floral border, Manuel's in red and blue and Juan's in red, blue, yellow, and brown. Manuel's sheet is trimmed into an oval shaped following the curves of the border. Both sheets were likely created as part of coursework with a writing instructor; Juan signed his sheet: Escrita por Juan Sanchez en la casa de educacion del señor don José Antonio Ogea.

Combining painting, photography, collage, and printmaking techniques, Sanchez's art joins images of contemporary barrio life with memories of Puerto Rico, and addresses a fragmented Latino community fraught with political resistance and cultural alienation. Interview by Bibiana Suarez.

1 Peter For You

A hope-filled expository guide to an epistle written to Christians in a society like ours. A must-read for Christians under cultural pressure. The book of 1 Peter could have been written for our times-a time of antagonism toward biblical ethics, and the marginalization of biblical Christians. Into that culture-our culture-Peter speaks of hope and offers joy as he points believers home to heaven. Juan Sanchez brings his experience of ministry in the US and Latin America, and his pastoral wisdom and insight, to this wonderful epistle-an epistle that every Christian needs to treasure today.
