The essays in this volume focus on different prose and audiovisual narratives and their academic and cultural significance as seen in the twenty-first century. Their diverse interpretations of the novel as a genre provide a current academic overview on the variety of interpretive cultures and traditions. Divided into three sections, the book consciously takes an international perspective in both narrative theory and novel studies in order to deepen the reader’s understanding of classic American and European authors including Gustave Flaubert, Lewis Carroll, James Joyce, Doris Lessing, Jack London, J. M. Coetzee, and David Lodge. In addition, it also offers a profound contribution to international scholarship as it covers works of classic and contemporary Hungarian and Central European writers that have not been discussed in English before. With its unprecedented insights into the depth and diversity of narrative prose traditions, the book will inspire innovative approaches to the concept of the novel in European academic criticism today.
This volume discusses the question of presence and/or absence from a transdisciplinary perspective, and intends to provide insights into how a wide range of disciplines addresses this issue which has been at the centre of philosophical, theoretical and critical debates in the past decades. As the essays in the volume prove, apparently diverse areas can have a lot in common and talk to each other in sometimes surprising ways. The topics discussed include modals in various languages and black slave funeral sermons, pragmatic markers and the Australian Stolen Generation, the transcendental in poems by Ann Bradstreet, Arthur Symons and Philip Larkin, short stories by Katherine Mansfield, generic...
Whether a conscious choice or constraint, silence has always been the result of oppression, censorship, trauma, and mental or physical handicap. Its provocative and mysterious nature has always motivated readers and critics towards interpretation. The present volume offers to read and interpret silence – unexpressed emotions, thoughts, hesitations and gestures – on mainly a textual and verbal level. How is the pervasive presence of silence explained in literature and linguistics? The collected scholarly essays in this volume offer a wide range of answers. The majority of the writings are literary critical in nature, focusing on major and less well-known literary texts from the Renaissanc...

Incorporating more than one linguistic code or mode of expression in literary and artistic productions has quickly grown over the last two decades. This volume pays special attention to the dynamic rise of code-switching especially in literature and performative arts, and explores strategies used by contemporary artists to compose their multilingual narratives as well as moves beyond the linguistic level in the direction of multimodality. The innovative frameworks and descriptions intend to highlight the different ways in which art, unlike ordinary language use, manifests language mixing and switching. Besides the papers by both young and established scholars, the volume includes a section of valuable contributions from multilingual authors and artists to bridge the gap between academic approaches and creative professional practices.
