An Anarchy of Families

Winner of the Philippine National Book Award, this pioneering volume reveals how the power of the country's family-based oligarchy both derives from and contributes to a weak Philippine state. From provincial warlords to modern managers, prominent Filipino leaders have fused family, politics, and business to compromise public institutions and amass private wealth--a historic pattern that persists to the present day. Edited by Alfred W. McCoy, An Anarchy of Families explores the pervasive influence of the modern dynasties that have led the Philippines during the past century. Exemplified by the OsmeƱas and Lopezes, elite Filipino families have formed a powerful oligarchy--controlling capital...

Diagnostic Approaches for Aspergillus Infections

Infections caused by Aspergillus spp. are associated with devastating mortality rates. Early and reliable diagnosis and subsequent rapid initiation of appropriate antifungal therapy has shown to improve survival significantly, at least for invasive Aspergillosis. Early diagnosis of Aspergillus associated infections, therefore, represents a cornerstone in successful management of these diseases. Current state of the art diagnostic approaches, new insights in epidemiology and established biomarkers as well as an outlook for future diagnostic options in the armamentarium of diagnostics tools are highlighted in this eBook.

Microbial Modulation of Host Apoptosis and Pyroptosis

Microbial Modulation of Host Apoptosis and Pyroptosis

Infectious disease is the result of an interactive relationship between a microbial pathogen and its host. In this interaction both the host and the pathogen attempt to manipulate each other using a complex network to maximize their respective survival probabilities. Programmed host cell death is a direct outcome of host-pathogen interaction and may benefit host or pathogen depending on microbial pathogenesis. Apoptosis and pyroptosis are two common programmed cell death types induced by various microbial infections. Apoptosis is non-inflammatory programmed cell death and can be triggered through intrinsic or extrinsic pathways and with or without the contribution of mitochondria. Pyroptosis...
