The Internal Structure of Periglacial Landforms

Periglacial environments are facing dramatic changes. Warming air temperatures and strong snow cover variations fundamentally affect landforming processes in this hotspot region of Climate Change. But before we can assess the response of landform development to a changing climate, we need to enhance our understanding of the internal structure of those landforms. Within this study, a broad scope of landform types from alpine and subarctic regions is investigated: rock glaciers, solifluction lobes, palsas and patterned ground. By using the geophysical methods 2-D and 3-D ERI, as well as GPR surveying, structural differences and similarities between landform units of different or the same landform types are highlighted. This enables a reconstruction of their past and a projection of their future development.

Multi-scale characterisation of permafrost landscapes and landforms in Northwest Canada based on in situ, geophysical and remote sensing data

Most of the periglacial environments on Earth are experiencing enormous changes during the ongoing climate warming. These changes strongly affect the thermal regime in the subsurface as well as geomorphological processes taking place. To assess how periglacial environments will develop in the future, it is important to know the recent subsurface structures and to understand their complex relationships to surface characteristics. Small-scale heterogeneities play an important role in this context, as they make large-scale predictions regarding future development very difficult. This study presents a multimethodological approach to reveal relationships between surface and subsurface properties and their respective small-scale distribution along a north-south transect throughout the Mackenzie Delta Region in Northwest Canada. In addition, high-resolution three-dimensional investigations of two pingos and a retrogressive thaw slump reveal new insights in the morphological development of these landforms.

This study integrates landscape archaeology and cognitive neuroscience to explore ancient Egyptian funerary practices. It examines how landscapes influenced cultural evolution, using case studies in Umm el-Qaab and Thebes. The research redefines the cultural role of landscapes, highlighting their dynamic influence on ancient Egyptian culture.
